And you can always store them in a cart - maybe you have a small cart you built and are no longer using to haul stuff, but it can still serve as storage.
I tned to use a chest next to my forge to save my metal imping tools (whetstone, hammers, etc.) since that is where I will need them. If I am raising sheep I might have one in my sheep pen that holds my scissors and possibly a grooming brush (though I usually carry that one). In your farming area maybe you want a coffin to store a rake and scythe. That way you always have your tools where you need them. You just have to remember to put them back :)
Do not leave your tools on the ground - they will decay. You either need to carry them or put them in a container or vehicle.
