Fine Carpentry
I need/want to make a Spinning Wheel, but apparently am not high enough in my FC to do so. I'm about 28 FC I think.

First, what are some simple items I can make to raise my FC by grinding it out for a bit?

Second, is the fact that they don't show you what skill level you need ingame WAI? or is it just something that never got added?

Rope tools are generally the accepted method for raising fine carpentry. Make them and improve them.

Don't know the answer to the second.

Thanks!

I think small barrels and small chests also work. But spamming those vs. rope tools would be a real toss up. Rope tools probably require less resources and are easy to carry for selling, etc.

A bed and other furniture like tables and chairs also help fine carpentry. The bonus of a bed is that you also get sleep bonus from it when logged out if you log out by going to bed. Chests, bulk food storage and other storage resources also helps if I recall.

True, tryst49, regarding the fact that beds give sleep bonus, but sadly the ql does not change the speed/amount you get said bonus. Thus, the other items (bsb, chest, etc.) do work, but rope tools are the most cost-efficient, and therefore the usual way to go.

I'd suggest you make 10 rope tools, improve them to around 5 to 10 points higher ql than your FC skill is. Afterwards, repeat that process until you are around 5 to 10 points higher, then improve all of your rope tools to your new "personal cap". Continue until the point you want to reach, enjoy :)

Hey Tryst - how do beds work for SP / dedicated servers? Since the server is typically shut down (at least that is how I have to do mine) the world time does not actually advance. Does the "timer" rely on some other system, instead of Wurm time? Or do you just get a very small sleep bonus time from the log out process?

Anyone tested this?

Do spindles also work? They don't require nails, as I recall, so even fewer resources.

And if OP is wanting a spining wheel, that means wool and a loom to make a hat. (Pretty limited at the moment : ) But spindles -> cotton thread -> pieces of cloth will increase several skills that play into making nicer hats.

And cotton is easy to farm and all the items can be used as bandages. Or you can craft other pieces of clothing to go with your nice new hat.

Ah. Curses, foiled again.

Sadly, I have yet to get a single piece of leather/hide/pelt from any of my butchering of my farm animals. I'm probably still not strong enough to take on a lion or bear. So a bed seems to be out of my reach right now.

But decoration would be a good use of materials to up my skill at least a little bit before grinding out rope tools and imping them. After all, the house is finished and it's probably time to settle into it.

Beds only give bonus if the server is running. When you shut down the server the game time stops running. The sleep bonus from beds is only really applicable for dedicated servers that are online 24/7 and doesn't benefit single players at all.

This is why I put a post in the suggestions for sleep powder to be craftable in Unlimited. You can't even spawn sleep powder as a GM and give it to your player character because you can't drop it or give it to another player. There would be no problems if it has a toggle so server admins could choose to prevent it being crafted.

Wolves will also drop (when butchered properly) the furs needed for a bed. Might take two, if you fail a check and waste a portion, otherwise a single fur (3.0 lbs) from a wolf makes the 3 x 1.0 lb fur resources for the bed.

Sigh. Figured that was the way it worked, but was hopeful. I remember your suggestion on sleep powder. Makes more sense now. <LOL> I thought it was some kind of alchemy to put enemies to sleep, when I say it on the merchant, for sale.

Still the price was so high, I can't see that ever being an option for SP - unless they come up with something like your suggestion. But if the requirements for crafting were similar to a bed (which can be used multiple times) it might still be impractical. And if the crafting requirements were that low, then no one will bother crafting a bed.

I think that thread may have also listed ideas for sleeping bags, etc.

Perhaps an easy to craft one shot sleeping bag - QL = sleep bonus time?
Tryst49 Apr 17, 2016 @ 11:41am
I do like the one-shot sleeping bag idea so long as it is a consumable that disappears after use. Cotton (made into sheets) and furs to make it means it's an expensive item in terms of mats but also gives a use for all those furs we get and have no use for after making a bed for ourselves, (unless someone knows of other crafting recipes that use furs). Pelts are another thing that have little use beyond imping stuff and I have more of those than I know what to do with. worst part is you can't put them anywhere but in your inventory because they degrade and disappear, I have not found a container yet that stops them taking damage and despawning other than my own inventory.

LokitheWeaver Apr 18, 2016 @ 12:24pm
@Tryst - I think some of that is the growing pains (well growing smaller as in SP vs. MP) In MP I suspect there is always some kind of "market" for those items. You get a better pelt for your personal use and hand down your old one - perhaps to a minion - or sell it to someone who couldnot loot that high of a quality.

I don't have a lot of time in the game, so it is harder to see degredation. I have actually been keeping extra furs and pelts in my rowboat ; )

Also looking at various resources (including the in-game book of wisdom) I see bear rugs and lion rugs . . . so if you have salt that might be an option. I think there is also an option for a hat / helmet using bear.
