What should I do with all of this low QL iron laying around?
I have been focusing on improving my pickaxe, so I now have a bunch of iron lumps (HUNDREDS of pounds) that are less than 50 QL. I can't see that they would ever have a use now since I am getting lumps in the 60-65range (and that will increase constantly as I improve my pickaxe).

I don't think it would be useful to improve anything with the low QL lumps as I just go straight to the highest QL lump I have laying around.

So what good is this low QL iron?

if you put all the 50 ql in a bulk bin then start adding the 60 ql to it the 50 will become 60 ql and so on.

But it is averaged as far as I can tell, so it would take a lot of 60QL to bring up this crap I have laying around. But, I do have a lot of it, so I might as well.

NAILFOOT you are right. Don't try to increase the ore with a BSB it'll take forever.

Most of us use the "low QL" ore to make stuff, then the better ore to imp with. If you want to grind skill make Arrowheads by the THOUSANDS for weapons smithing or Small nails for Blacksmithing. You can start lamps for the deed, ribbions for BSB's, make weapons blades for Bladesmithing, etc.. tons of stuff to make.

Once you get a stock of items that you don''t want then use the your Alter and sacrifice them! That'll give you enchantment bonuses for your deed, or use a smelting pot to recycle the ore and make MORE items. The other thing is it is reported that you have better chance of getting a "Rare" item during creation then you do during Impping.

You can also try to imp items untill they are of higher QL then your "junk" lumps (assuming you don't need your better lumps to get there) and use a Smelting pot on them to get better lumps.

There are plenty of reasons to keep even the lowest QL ores, it is all useful to some degree!

Never say never! I just looked. I have 10.5 (21,000 pounds) tons of useless iron ore. I could produce hundred of ribbons once I cooked it down!!

I normally make nails out of the lq metal, statues and such also have no ql need so you can make them to improve your crafting skill. The better quality metal I keep for imping and making stuff that I am trying to get to a higher quality to begin with. A compass for example can't be improved so getting something that's good quality from the start is necessary.

Most of the time I just toss everything into a single bsb. Only time I dont is when i know ill need high QL for imping later or if im working with very high QL stuff thats harder to get.

I normally make ribbons for mine reinforcements or practice lock making on them, spew out a ton of door locks and get them sacrificed on full favor to raise the Enchanting/Rarity Window bonus in my town.

Go for rare parts... if you want a rare shovel make 500 and smelt/trash the rest. Or as said Nails Ribbons and so on

DO NOT MIX YOUR METAL. You can use a 1 QL lump to make an item, then use an array of various QLs to upgrade it. You will not use more metal, and overall, you'll end up running out of lower QL ore before higher QL ore.

This is what I have been doing. I make an item with a 50-60 QL lump, and then improve it with the lowest QL lumps available until I have reached the upper limit based on my skill.
