However, without any idea of how this whole thing works - I looked up on the shelf here and saw my tablet charging and thought, "weee-e-e-e-ll... may-BE."
Earnestly considering what it takes to get even some of the simplest tasks done, while at my keyboard in Wurm(s), it seemed like it'd take a lot of work.
There are those who not only excel at making this sort of thing happen, but are at the height of their enjoyment while doing it. It could BE then, that getting the proposed client made isn't so much the issue, as is finding the right people or person to do it.
but wurm isn't that complex in it's controls, it's mostly camera work, some left and right clicking or the shortcuts. so the most "complicated" would probably getting a useful inventory, since the WURM original is too unsuited for a mobile. however with some simple filters for specific items this could work.
And Wurm is easily the game where i use the most keybinding....
you do not necessarily need tht many keybinds, using keybinds os for the ease of use. but the major actions you do wouldn't require some, look at a wall, and there aren't that many options, so for basic tass like mining, and tending fields it would be enough and help people not at home taking care of a few things..
Just take foraging for example. On PC i just walk forward holding W and spam Q and E to forage and botanize as i walk by tiles. Now on a tablet with only a single action possible at a time i would need to move forward, possibly rotate camera, then click on the tile, then select forage, then click again, then select botanize, then rotate or move and start again.
So an action i make i less than a second on PC now takes a minute on a tablet. It's like Minecraft mobile but 10 times worst since Wurm as the least "not keyboard" user friendly interface possible using windows and contextual menus.
That's not even getting into that
A) Abandoned
B) Old asf code
C) Would take a whole lot of slimming down to even run on mobile
What a silly comment. Why not? And even so, why do you assume mobile gamers only play in bursts of 5 minutes? And are you forgetting tablets? Some tablets are more powerful than some people's PC's. Games like Eve Online exist on mobile so no reason why Wurm couldn't be picked up by a third party developer willing to do a conversion.
read what he wrote, he didn't say a tablet is more powerfukl than a computer. and you probably haven't seen many "acual" pc games, there are plenty which wouldn't need a lot of hardware to work. and the usual way to work in a tram is often around 20minutes thats totally fine to mine some ore (since this is a pretty repetetive job) or rake your fields.
and foraging would work well too, you only go to a corner assign foraging on 4 tiles and then go to the next corner.
Sure nothing is as good on pc, mobiles never will be, in no existing game ever. but it's sufficient for many mundane tasks helping people to do these regular chores. or even just chat ingame.
It's my understanding that you'd have to rewrite a lot of code to get it working on any mobile OS, and given the tiny playerbase the game has on PC it just wouldn't be worth anyone's time to do.
If any tablet is more powerful than your PC, it's high time to upgrade regardless.
