Trying to dig a canal
I have been digging a canal for a week now and have hit upon a problem. The canal is deep enough so that water barely covers it (1 or 2 deep) and not deep enough to row my small rowing boat along all of it. I can row it about halfway until I come to a stop. As the ground there is rock and not dirt I thought I'd mine it out. That went OK for the first tile but I cannot mine the next tile (it says that the surrounding area needs to be rock. So I dug out the dirt to each side down to the rock but I still get the same message. I think it's complaining about the "mine entrance" next to it.) If I try to mine it from the side of the "mine entrance" it complains that the water is too deep. Any ideas how I can dig through the rock and complete my canal? or have I wasted a week?

I cannot necessarily visualize you situation there, but what I know about terra forming is quite simple. I do not know if it involves you canal opening or not. To remove a single tile of rock, the soil or dirts on the tiles of all four connecting corners must be completely gone.
Wurmpedia is bloated with info/console commands etc.., about terra removal. Rock-bustin.
I'm no authority. For this I do apologize.

So not just the four sides but the four corners as well? Making 8 tiles altogether that have to be cleared? I'll try it and report back in a week or so :(

I'd say you should make a boat transporter instead. Making a canal solo on a 1x server is quite a job to take on... And i do not know if a dredge can mine rock, pretty sure no.

I created a canal on one server, but it had a much deeper dirt layer. That meant I could dig down to 20 or more under the water and still not hit rock. The standard map does not have a very deep dirt layer, so it's quite easy to hit rock only a little way down.

I'm not sure if there's a mod that allows you to dig rock without clearing the corners first, it would definitely be a big hit with many players. I lost count of how many times I got irritated by not being able to dig the rock down by just one without digging out all the surrounding tiles first and messing up the entire landscape design I had wanted to create.

There is indeed a mod for it. I don't know which though, sorry... But most server i play on have this mod to allow you to dig and mine as much as you can without having to expose all the rock tiles.
