The correct answer seems to me to be, forage an iron rock and rummage a flint, and be able to use those to light your oven and forge. if you think thats too OP remember that the flint and steel is a single item, lighter, and far more durable than the foraged items. But this way doesnt punish players who lose their stuff before climbing the top of the tech tree.
And "dwelling" on a point of frustration and potential roadblock is exactly what gets problems in the game addressed and fixed.
If you're simply offline playing you can also GM just make a GM character to give it to you.
The NPC's traders also have some Steel and Flint for sale it seems.
Edit: Oh, now I see. You can also get charcoal from Hell hounds. Those don't seem too hard.
And jomegar, try fighting a hellhound only with gear you dont need a lit forge to make. Even bows require nails for the rope tool.
You do not need Flint and Steel to make new gear. You have access to campfires. From that you can make new gear. Anvils and hammers are what you need to make gear. Fires heat it all up. It also still takes work to make and have an effective quality forge. Things in Wurm take time.
