Is there a water source on the tile you built the fountain? If you don't know what i am talking about, then i guess you build it on a random tile, fountains or wells won't fill themselves there.
If you want to check which tile got a water source : https://www.wurmpedia.com/index.php/Water_divining
The thing is sprouting water but it gives no water.

If you have placed it on a water tile which will auto fill the container that you can then activate your flask and then right click the water and fill or drag the water and drop into your flask. If you've placed it on a water tile when you open the fountain a droplet with the word water will be inside the opened fountain.
If you haven't, then you'll need to go and collect water from another source and drag and drop the water you've collected manually into the fountain. (Which if you're going to the trouble of going to a water source to fill the water I highly recommend bringing amphora jugs to fill and placing them in an amphora rack. :)
This was all because when I first mined, I dug into the cliff, the initial shaft went down and not in. Could have been my mistake, ya think?
So there's water at the entrance and the cart refuses to go any farther. So I figured I'd mix some concrete and fill the corners, but then I'd loose my near water source.
You should have seen it. I had 11 fires going, waiting for them to die so I could get the ash. It must have looked like the forest was on fire. No mosquito's around me that night I'll tell you. :)
So I figured if the water was 1 square down, and me being soooo new, I could make a fountain. LOL. Guess I was wrong.
Thanks again Selenity Rose, and the other guys too. :)
tile being a "spring" tile which is what a fountain or well needs to be on in order to auto-fill.
A cart can go into water that's up 8 "dirts" deep. So you CAN raise the floor to a point that it's shallow enough for the cart, yet still deep enough to drink from. Maybe.
Maybe, because you can't make the overall cave height too low. You may have to raise the ceiling in order to raise the floor. Depending on terrain contours, you may not be allowed to raise the ceiling.
and I admit it's kinda deceptive to have a fountain that's not got water in it spewing a fountain of water :/
Yesterday I learned you CAN plant too many crops. ha-ha.
I think I need to play with another person. I have over 120 pumpkins, and potatoes, and almost as many corn. I'll eat for a year on this.
I need silver or gold for this little dude, so I might just dig a hole, as the water is 2 tiles down for now.. lol
I know how to divine for water, did so and got nothing in the fountain after an hour. Cant fill a barrel waterskin flask or anything else from any of the water tiles either. Definately a bug here.
