I kept at it and after getting my pole and hook quality up around 10, and my fishing skill over 10 I was able to catch a couple tiny fish. Still there are some major problems.
1. The float system is just bad. Why can't we make floats? This is the single reason I'm really not looking forward to fishing anymore. If it takes 10-20 minutes to find a new piece of bark, and that piece of bark only lands me 1-2 tiny fish (probably more as I skill up sure) it's just bad time/reward ratio overall. If I could craft them, I'd be out there fishing right now.
2 and 3 are visual probs, so really just floats are making it not fun.
2. 1/3 the time I hook something, the line jumps 4-5 tiles in a random direction.
3. 90% of the time the fish goes under the ground (I'm shore fishing) and you're fishing the grass.
All in all it "works" and the title is a bit harsh, but the float system is very poorly thought out in my opinion.
However, this is Wurm, and if you spend an hour or three as a newbie trying this, you will end up as a hungry and frustrated fisher indeed. I know fish nets are kind of what fishing used to be, but you only catch very tiny fish with it. Thats not going to feed anyone. And in any case, the materials required for said net are not easily obtained early game.
Spear fishing is also confusing and bothersome, as any spearsman will have to aim far off to catch anything swimming by, and how can you do so when :
A. The fish blend in with the games flavor graphics of fish.
B. The spear takes damage with every miss.
C. The fact that fishing cant happen unless in a boat or on the shore, making it either ludicrously expensive early game to pick up spear fishing, or giving the player the handicap of not actually being able to see the close up fish, because I suspect they're swimming underneath the dirt...
Last update, all I had to do was carve a couple shafts and spin some cotton and I had a fishing rod good to go. Simple, easy to understand, and effective. Just how actual fishing should be. :P
So, even though I really want to say I appreciate Tich's work, All in all, I don't because in reality the broken version ended up being more fun...
Again though, the constant searching for bark or twig or feather or moss is -not fun-, when it has to be repeated very frequently. Floats should be able to be crafted out of any soft wood.
The fish from netting are too tiny to get excited about, and spear fishing.. doesn't sound like fun. It's certainly not in reality. My opinion though.
