How much RAM do you need for a private server?

I'm looking to rent a server for me and my buddy.
I'd like to know how much server RAM would be good for 2 or 3 (max 5, but i doubt it) players.
1 GB is 7 bucks/month, 2GB is 10.

number of players is not so much of a consideration until you get to high numbers.

The question I would need to ask, to answer your question is what map size are you going for?

for a 1028 map you want 2 gigs to be confortable.
2046 3 gigs to be comfortable.
and 4098 5 gigs to be comfortable.

If it is a server for just a few of you, and you have any experience with game server administration at all, and one of you has a reliable connection with a computer that can stay on all the time, I would suggest just hosting yourself rather than renting a server. Totally up to you though.

The ram usage comes more out of the creatures moving around and item in memory storage than anything from my experience.

I dont know how to get other maps, so i'd use the default one (the one that comes with the game). Im not sure exactly how big it is.

xypes right, max creatures and player counts def have the biggest impact. On a default map you will never max 2-3 gb unless your creature counts go absurd.
