The question I would need to ask, to answer your question is what map size are you going for?
for a 1028 map you want 2 gigs to be confortable.
2046 3 gigs to be comfortable.
and 4098 5 gigs to be comfortable.
If it is a server for just a few of you, and you have any experience with game server administration at all, and one of you has a reliable connection with a computer that can stay on all the time, I would suggest just hosting yourself rather than renting a server. Totally up to you though.
The ram usage comes more out of the creatures moving around and item in memory storage than anything from my experience.
