Dedicated Server and Game on same PC

I've just gone through the exhausting process of setting up the server for running on my sim PC, however, when I run the server, Steam thinks I'm already playing a game and will not let me run rFactor2, is it not possible to do both on the same machine?

yes, thats part of the magic ! Someone thought its a good idea!
You have to start the game first, then the server (or the other way around ?, I forgot)

Alternative: try the standalone dedicated, thats better because if you're game crashes or you have to stop it for some reason you have to go through the whole loop again. Start game, start server. COBOL Rulez!
But - the standalone is a PITA, only for techsavy ppl

I'm running the dedicated server and in a standalone folder C:\Racing... but it still kicks off 'Playing' in steam, which makes no sense to me... Must be something small I'm missing?

It's because the desktop shortcut link your using to start rfactor, is pointing to steam.exe.
You need to make shortcut link that points to rfactor2.exe inside the Bin64 folder.
On the shortcut properties, you need to delete /bin64 from the startin box.

you have to start up rf2 before you launch the server.
