Depends on what you're into. I know the F1 1988 mod by carrera.4 is really good, but the game comes with the FISI 2012 car, but they're from completely different eras. The F1 1988 mod also comes with the complete set of tracks from that year. I mostly pay attention to open-wheel cars so that's my suggestion.

https://www.asrformula.com/ has a lot of F1 cars too that are free and really well done, as good as the official content.

https://www.simracinghub.com/ has modern F1 cars and tracks.

http://www.internationalsimracing.com/forum/index.php?board=65.0 and this website has some more things as well like the F1 track pack from RaceRfactor and FE track pack from Errol Prefet. FE pack is also in the workshop.

If you ever wanna use mods without staying subscribed to workshop items, just browse your workshop folder and search the number that appears in the workshop URL and it will take you right to the .rfcmp or .rfmod file so you can back them up if you want to for any reason.

that sounds really cool this seems to be the most customise able game i have seen on the market or at least one of them makes me think of the total war modding scene.

It's definitely a good one! The base game itself really is a great piece of software with a value much higher than it's asking price in my opinion. So I didn't mind spending all the money to buy out all the content from the DLC store, either. Definitely great content there, the Kartsim content I suggest buying first because the game doesn't come with karts by default, but there are some karts I picked up for free joining an online lobby which were better than the official karts in my opinion, but that's because the ones I stumbled upon had the shifter kart. I'd say just try joining kart lobbies till you find those free karts I found and download some kart tracks off the workshop too lol. Content from online lobbies will download and install automatically. If it's paid content that you don't own, it will just reject your entry to the lobby. So that's how you can tell if you're on the right track or not.

Another thing, some content doesn't stack after other content is installed. For instance say you own the Ferrari 488 GT3 and you get a skin pack for that car that also includes skins for other GT3 cars, you will have to uninstall that skin pack before installing the other GT3 cars if you purchase them later or else the new GT3 cars will not install and tell you "missing base mod" when in fact it IS the base mod, but a mod that is supposed to come AFTER it was installed before it. Something to watch out for.

Lastly, all downloaded packages from joining lobbies will show up in your "Packages" folder within the games install directory, so you can keep content you found online as well.

I see

sadly my old wheel broke down i hope this works fine with a xbox controller as that has been my main weapon of choice lately it just mainly seems to be a case of getting the sensitivity settings right lets cross our fingers.

I will admit, with a wheel it's like you can feel the rubber on asphalt friction through your wheel and with a controller I'm not too sure you will receive even half the experience this game has to offer, but definitely keep this game around because it's the best one I've ever played on. Especially with all the third party mod support, this is a game that almost never needs replacing.

Though i have played games that use the ISI motor engine GTR2 for example and some of the old nascar games that were released for pc like nascar thunder and nascar sim racing and also f1 challenge/02
and automobilista as well
it should not be too hard to get it set up properly.

An update to the F1 1988 mod I recommended, this one is superior to it and is a collaboration of many mod authors including carerra.4 that made the F1 1988 mod: https://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/?id=2188673436
