What FOV do you run at?
I've started to mess around with the FOV and was curious what other people use the most. Is there a good way to calcuate this? I am using a single monitor.

You should take a look at FOV Calcuator from Project Immersion - http://www.projectimmersion.com/fov/

Depends a bit on the track, generally between 30-36°, single 42" desk monitor.

I use the iRacing calculator, or put that triangular meter/degree meter in between your eyes and measure degree that way (that thing people use to draw lines and measure degrees). For me using that website billybob posted above, and iRacing, I got an accurate calculation of 882 milimeter, which is 88.2 centimeter distance to a 40 inch screen, and it calculates it to be 53 horizontal degrees, which is convertable to a 32 vertical degrees on 16:9 ratio. rFactor 2 uses vertical degrees, so 32 for rFactor 2. Assetto Corsa also uses vertical. Project Cars 2 uses horizontal. Can't recall what automobilista uses.

Generally, the closer the screen, the higher the degrees.

Not sure how anyone can drive with a FOV of 32 on a single screen. It may work for solo driving, but you lose much awareness with opponents. I've found the default 50 to be a pretty good compromise between realism and practicality of single screen.

I used 30 when I was driving with single screen (24" and about 50cm from my eyes). Now I'm driving with Oculus rift so no more messing with FOV.

What? 50 is WAAY high. If you see opponents immediately to your side on a single screen, you're definitely doing it wrong.

According to the site I should use 24 due to my 19" screen. But I use 60º to 66º depending on car and track. Anything less and I feel like a horse with blinkers.

If 50 vertical FOV is way too high, then why is it the default setting in sims like rF2? As I said, you lose awareness of opponents with low FOV, so FOV is always a compromise between realism and practicality. If you want pure realism then yes, some minimal FOV is the way to go, at the cost of colliding with opponents.

It's 50 because for some people it's the difference between puking all over the place or not.
Sure, it's a compromise. In most people's PC setups it'd be ridiculously narrow. I use 35, which is as high as I could ever see myself setting it. And I don't regularly collide with people, as it happens.
Upping it to 50 wouldn't even make any difference in situational awareness in 95% of cases.

50 is not way toooo high ;-) My FOV is 52 , but on an 100" screen and 127 cm away ..... The REAL FOV is the only way to go ....... atleast for me

Do you have to edit your player.json file to get these choices. in my rF2, I have default and two settings. + or - 10, which are huge changes. Down a long hall stretched and no cockpit viewable at all.

Im using 52..single monitor, looks good.

The whole idea of using a "realistic" fov is useless, worthless, and a waste of breath arguing about it.

1) IRL you can see 120 degrees around you. Your peripheral vision can detect cars immediately to both sides.

2) keeping the above in mind, your eyes IRL are always moving about, so you're always keeping your surroundings in check. In the game you can't move your eyes to check blind spots. Yes you can look in game to left and right, but then you lose sight of what's ahead or to the opposite of the way youre looking.

3) You can't judge distance on screen. So proper distance to that car ahead is IMPOSSIBLE. You can LEARN how far that car is from repeated mistakes (hitting the car), and then your brain remembers, oh that car is this big in the screen therefore I'm about to hit it. But judging the distance impossible.

4) #3 above therefore makes the argument that proper fov makes you a better judge of distance is moot. If you play at 130 degrees fov you will eventually LEARN through mistakes how close a car is by it's size on screen.

Even at 60 or 70 degrees in rf2, you're not seeing what you can see IRL.

If you're using a single monitor, set the fov so you can see what's going on around you.

I use 43 degrees myself . Use the mirrors for awareness of other cars . 43 degrees for me helps me hit corner apexes better and helps with better judgement of braking zones . 50 degrees or me was a bit zoned out .

Suppose , its really all a matter of personal preference . Each to their own . No simulator , no matter how go it is, is going to replicate real life exactly .
