Not everyone owns an Android device.
If a person has a computer then presumably they own a phone.
If they own a phone then they have no excuse.
Unless they have a Windows Phone... because Pixel Dungeon isn't on the Windows Phone platform. Which is exactly why I bought it for Steam in the first place. So, yes, there is an excuse.
EDIT: Also if anyone has an iOS device they won't be able to play either, I've found out - android only app.
ALSO: the point of the game is to see how far you can get with the randomized resources at your disposal and the skill set (class) you start with. you don't win every game of solitaire or minesweeper, and pixel dungeon is better than both. diablo 2 & LOD had the exact same optional feature, offering permadeath as an additional gameplay risk. perhaps that's the way it had always been intended to be played.
It is available for iOS for 2.99.
@LOL_SHARK - 'is not exemplary of great wit regarding the issue'...
You could have just said, 'is ignorant', or 'is ill informed', or even 'hasn't considered the developers side of things'..
Instead you decided to go with a string of words you got at a thrift shop, because people think using big words makes them sound smarter. I gotta say man, it sure worked ;)
Even though this seems like a lousy attempt to change the subject, I think you do bring up a fair point: There is no need to strut my strength with words about, like another guy bragging how much money he makes, or how fast he can throw a baseball or cricket pitch. I do know (except in those times I've forgotten and stumble into the use of "thrift shop" words) that illiteracy is still something of a problem. There's also dyslexia and poverty to consider. On top of those, there are people who are otherwise gifted with the use of words, just not English words. English is a famously difficult language to learn for people around the world, and I may not be doing them any favours by using words that do not translate very well, or if they have too many different translations.
So its likley good that I try some re-wording on my part:
- Steam does not have a "Pay what you want" option (at least not now).
- The Android version allows you to chip in as little as one dollar, up to five, and <pixeldungeon.watabou.ru> has always had a donation link using Paypal.
- Since Steam doesn't have a "Pay what you want" option (yet), look at this listed price as it is in Steam as a donation that you can't increase or decrease like you could in just about all other versions; its fixed at that point, take it or leave it.
- The Steam store page links to the Pixel Dungeon website, where you can download the free version.
- The creators of the game are, and have always been, absolutley fine with you downloading this game for free (as they have stated several times by now).
If that last point is worthy of anything, its in saying it again:
The creators of the game are perfectly fine with you downloading the free version.
Then again, your stubborness that is some kind of trickery on the part of the developers probably will not give any one here the idea that you really understand what "the developer's side of things" really are.
Also, I didn't know the Steam store page had a link to watabou's webpage.
At any rate I'm just trying to help people out.
Times are tough in my opinion and five dollars for a game that the dev offers for free is steep.
That being said, and despite my earlier criticism of the games difficulty, I like watabou.
If a person understands that the game is free, and wants to buy it here anyway I am all for it.
You don't have to donate, or spend, five dollars; its up to five. If you have the Android version or go to the Paypal link you can spend one dollar if you want to pay anything at all.
For all we know, times could be tough for watabou. Maybe watabou has a day job, and had enough spare time to make this. Maybe watabou is trying to live in a high rent city with student loan debt. Or maybe watabou is rich with a great set-up, but wants to start off small and build up a video game career from scratch.
That's a lot of guess work, and watabou does not have to explain a detailed life story, but even a game like this takes some work. The Axiom Verge developer quit his day job and seriously strained his marriage (if not broke it outright) to make that game by himself. He got critical acclaim, but there was no free version. Then, there's Minecraft. Totally larger and different game, but for the entire time that it wasn't a retail option, Notch used Paypal the way that watabou is now.
I read this article a few months ago, and it is a good one about the history of independant game developers: The Rise and Fall of the Lone Game Developer[www.jeffwofford.com].
In the meantime, please don't think that I'm trying to force you to pay, five dollars, one, or otherwise. Whatever watabou's situation, it's probably not as risky as the Axiom Verge developer. You seem too focused on the price listing in Steam, and all I think you're saying is that you think its the only way to download the game (either five dollars or free) when that just isn't true. The point of the game is to see how far you can get with a specific set of skills and the random items in the dungeon. It's meant to be more fun than solitaire or minesweeper in a way that does not demand your undivided attention the way most other games would. Actually, there is a free alternative version called Easy Dungeon that offers the difficulty you want (Pixel Dungeon is open source now). These facts are what people need to know.
Just fyi, they made an iOS version and published it for $3.
i do not own a phone or own a android device
i am quite happy to buy this game for $5
so buzz off
Turns out Easy Dungeon doesn't exist anymore... been a while since I last checked Google Play.
