to make posters i would use GIMP or photoshop tbh
altho it is posible in blender to make nice scenery and lighting to get a perfect picture
both of those programs need some skills so if u not good in drawing try blender and model stuff

Depends on what you are making posters for. If not Valve Models, and you can import them into Blender, then Blender unless you port them into a Valve model that can be opened in SFM. If you're using Valve models, SFM, unless you want to Decompile the model and convert all the materials to images that Blender can load to get it into Blender.

Both are viable if you know what you're doing. If using dedicated Source models, I'd say SFM would be slightly more convinient, since it's designed to be used with those files. But if you're making something 100% from scratch using your own work...

Well actually it goes back to my first point. Even if you use 100% unique assets you can still make something good in SFM. But you can make an equally good render in Blender if you take the time to learn how everything works

Well honestly it depends on what you want to do. If it's only valve models (or stuff you can get from the SFM workshop) then it would be easier to use SFM for your posters. For anything else I'd recommend blender using the cycles rendering.

I do not know what is SFM but as everyone says you can make a beautiful rendering with blender and rework all under GIMP (or Photoshop) http://www.blenderguru.com/tutorials/create-a-motivational-poster/
