What exactly is Blender "Game"?
I have been experimenting with it but I cant figure it out. Is it an actual game? Or is it just a type of render?

Blender is a bit more general, as games are born from it, but yes, it qualifies as a software, not a game. Only reason I haven't downloaded the one from Steam was because I already had this version for over a year or two and didn't want to lose all my work just to replace my Blender with the same one on Steam. :P

You wont lose your work. Trust me.

Blender "Game" is a Game Engine, you can actually write some games and compile them to run outside of Blender itself.

I don't know the Limitations or Abilities of the Engine, I have not studied it extensively, personally, but I have played a basic game written by a friend using Blender "Game".

If you have the saved files you can open them in Blender. The only thing that I think you will lose are addons.

not gonna want to lose those XD

Blender ISN'T a game, hence that is why it is in the SOFTWARE section of your library.

Blender is a multipurpose 3D (primarily) model creation, editing tool, it can be used to create and rig models for various game engines; with it's powerful picture and video compositing tool and render engine, it can be used to create 3D Art and enhance video. It can be used to create videos from image sequence pictures and sound or creature full length feature films; it can be used to add animation to models for use in SFM and with it's game engine the creation of 3D games.

So, nope, not a game.....

*Sigh* Silly. Thats not what I mean. One of the render opitions is "Blender Game". BTW I know what SFM is.

i do not know a great deal about it, other than what Corodius said above. im not sure about this, but i do remember reading something about works made in blender game automatically falling under a GNU (or similar) license. so if you plan on using it to actually make games you might want to look into the licensing conditions first.
myclay May 24, 2015 @ 9:40am
the Blender game engine or short word 'BGE' was able to deploy on the Playstation 1 architecture.
the BGE is extremely dated and not recommended.
regarding the licencing;
http://www.blender.org/support/faq/

you can of course still create interesting things with the Game engine part of Blender but to get interesting results, knowledge of python and writing glsl shaders is an absolute must.

blender is a tool (you can use it as engine but you have no reason to) to make anything youre gonna need for any kind of game or whatever is that youre creating

As always, I'm surprised at the number of people that didn't even read the OP question.

Anyway, as mentioned already, the Blender Game Engine is a functional game engine, but very, very dated. It's probably not really worth your time.

Instead, you'd probably be more productive setting up a good workflow between Blender and Unity, as they work together quite nicely.

Disagree with first part, agree with second part.

You, sir are underestimating the greatness of this program. Even though programs like Maya are newer-gen and make the models look better, Blender has been around longer, is free, and you can work more accurately with it. Just think of the comparisons between Macs and PC. The fact that it is free and in the Steam store (ALSO FOR FREE) makes it easier in case you lose Steam and need to redownload all your programs.

Before that, we did answer the OP questions. Next time, read and understand why we included this info..

He wasn't accusing Blender at all. Just saying that the GAME engine is not great.
Kumquat [Velbud] Jun 1, 2015 @ 2:27pm
I dont think there is a game engine in it at all? :/ You can animate and create in it, like movies too, but not an engine...

UPDATE: I did extra research. It has a game engine. In my opinion, a free engine is better than no engine. :P
