Annoying shadow issue on my model
Hi, I'm working on a character model that I started earlier, but I'm having a big problem:

When I look at the model's arms in rendered/material view, there's weird shadow lines going all the way along the arms.

Here's a screenshot:

As you can see on the right it's smooth when in solid view, I've tried smooth and flat shading (smooth is in the screenshot) and they both seem to have this issue. I used looptools to create a circle then extrude it from the torso a few times to create the arms.

Check your normals, they may be reversed... (pointing inward instead of outward.)

Thanks but I'm new to Blender, how do I that?

I had a quick look online and I've tried a few things to do with the normals, but it hasn't fixed the issue.

Hmm.. I've found a bunch of vertices sticking out, I'll see if I can fix it.

Nevermind, it's probably best if I just delete the arms and start them again.

As he said, check your normals, you can recalculate normals orientation by selecting all your faces and press Ctrl+N.
If that doesnt work, try a "remove doubles". that will merge all vertices that have a distance inferior to the treshold.

The issue is fixed now I deleted the arms part and restarted, it didn't affect any other part of the model. I'll keep it in mind if this happens again though.

CTRL+N just reloads the startup file for me.

Its obviosly to late now but when you ever stumble across this issue again this should fix it:
Go to edit modeand open up your properties panel (it should be open by default i think, but if its not press n) go down to "Mesh Display". Under "Normals:" you can turn the normals on and adjust the size of the arrows. Usually this kind of lighting issue occurs when some of the faces face inwards. Just mark them and invert the normals. To do this press Space and type "flip normals" and hit Enter. That should do the trick :)

"CTRL+N just reloads the startup file for me." that becuase you are pressing whilst you are in "object mode" you gotta be in "edit mode" (tab) then hit "Ctrl+N" (to recalculate normals) but looks more like you have duplicate verts around arms.
select object and go into editmode, then scroll down on the tools option panel (right side) and click on remove doubles. Hope that helps

Maybe you can remove doubles, (select all verticles and click on "remove doubles" on the left bar)

Did you manage to get it fixed elfoxy?

Yes I did, deleting the arms of my character and starting again seemed to fix it, at least I didn't have to start the whole thing over.

ohh ok, yeh starting over would have been a real pain but atleast you got it sorted 1 way or another :-) keep at it.
