Report a translation problem
the mirror modifier use the position of your origin to mirror the object.
only offtopic tip i can give is to use Clipping
I was really confused about this a few years ago and couldn't find any answer, but than I switched to wireframe and saw it there. So Blender simply shows only faces added through mirror in edit mode, no edges or verts :)
Maybe little late, but I thought I would add my point of view to this since I was confused with this "not really problem" in past too.
also edges could be visible if you change in Properties window > Object tab > Display > Maximum draw type - to Wireframe, but you would also see only wireframe :D
