Auto Updates and Add-ons
Ok, I use Blender both the original and the Steam versions... My Add-ons (for the most part) are located in my C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\Blender Foundation\Blender\{versionnumber}\scripts\addons folder (which I believe the Steam version reads as well to find plugin and addons. So this is not really a biggy for me but it might be for people that are only using the Steam Version).

Now the question,

When Blender updates on Steam, it appears the old version is completely wiped from existance and a fresh new install is placed in to the Steam path (steamapps\common\Blender\{version Number}\ )

So if I were placing my addons in to the Steam Path

(like the old method of adding addons, steamapps\common\Blender\{version number}\scripts\addons)

and Blender updates, does the update delete the "Custom" add ons I've installed for the previous version, or is the old addon folder passed to the new version during the update??

If the old addons folder is erased, is there something that can be done to protect it during an update so I don't have to go looking for the addons again and reinstall them?

As I said before, this doesn't really apply to me personally because I know to place custom addon in my appdata path.

But for the new user, using the old addon method, working on their first huge project, after saving and closing down their last session for the night only to open later and find that Blender had updated and all their custom addons missing just might be a little devastating.. (If you know what I mean!! Wink Wink, nudge Nudge!!)

on first startup u can click someting to keep old settings this include addons aswell i think, also u might want to copy paste the addon map to a secure location, to have a backup if it fails.

Thanks for the idea.
I run Blender and other Programs now outside of Steam because I want a robust solution.

When Blender is updated on Steam the splash screen will provide you with the ability to keep your original settings from the old version THE FIRST time you run the new version. If you miss the opportunity, blender will set up the new version as a new install... See this artwork for where to look.
