Simple Fixes to giving metal a proper reflective look
This is probably a question y'all get semi-regularly but....
I been modeling for a while never could figure out how to properly give metal shaders a proper reflective instead of the dull grey look of the background like they have in render mode. I am aware of how to handle shader nodes and the likes I just haven't really figured out how to fix this.

I'm assuming you already put the roughness to 0 (or close) to actually get a reflective surface? (and metallic to 1 and the correct color for the kind of metal you want)

In that case you are probably lacking something to actually reflect in the metal. I recommend using an HDRi or similar image as environment texture. Random tutorial for that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iu_m5qRHd74

Just to elaborate: In case you are using Orthographic Viewport Display or Render, the reflections will always show just a solid color, since they are only sampled from the orthographic angle.
So yeah, there has to be something to be reflected and the object needs enough smoothness (also shade smooth or autosmooth) to get a crisp chrome like material or whatever.

*only for flat surfaces ;)

Oh yes true, if you make round stuff and shade smooth you get around the orthographic angle issue. Since i do architecture mostly, this wasn't that obvious because of all the flat stuff ;D
