Scaling from one side
How to scale an object just from one side instead of its center?

use the cursor as the scaling origin (check the top menu bar for the options)

edit: scale cage works, but I can't find how to keymap it, there's nothing for "cage" in preferences

You need to do what andycprints said. Place the cursor to the left of the object and then scale by using the 3D cursor as pivot point.
Alternatively you can move the origin of the object (the little orange dot) to the left and then use that as pivot point.

Scale cage works as well but you have better control from where you want to scale with the ones above
