If so roll back to either 2.83 LTS (recommended) or 2.92 via the STEAM Beta function in the properties.
[EDIT]] Just did rollback to 2.93 Stable; still nothing.
2.79 is not a bad blender, but it is before the BIG overhaul that introduced the current gen blender with 2.8.
So yeah its probably your graphics driver or or hardware simply can't do Open GL 3.3, as that is a requirement for Blender 2.8 and up.
I just got back from using 2.92. same issue. All I did was go to auto save. Last time I went to open and it again closes. I'm now trying 2.83 LTS, but I don't see that working out any different. I was able to get 2.6 working but when I get to 3.0 or higher it's just the same thing over and over.
yeeeeaaaah sooo now 2.83 won't work either my only option(s) would be to like reset the computer, but that solution is only temporarily until the next time this happens
--or --
replace my gpu (it's an RX570. I heard it supports OpenGL3.3 which Is what is required for the new(est) version of blender, but the latest Drivers for the GPU are only available for Windows 7, 10 and 11; no idea why 8 is the exception ( I only went with it because it handles what I need to do conveniently, and it was free at the time.)
Which version were these files initially created? It might be that simply loading the file (including the UI) leads to the crash. What you can try is this:
Instead of opening the File try to go to File -> Append -> Browse to your file and then either append the whole scene or go to Objects and Append all Objects (hit A to select All in the browser).
Depending on which blender versions these files were created in, they might not be 100% downwards/ upwards compatible, while the contents (meshes etc) can still be processed by simply appending them.
Edit: Windows 8 ..unfortunately i'm totally not familiar with this OS, it occupies a weird niche when it comes to support it seems :(
It closed again. The same thing; happened again ... I'm beginning to panic. I'm gonna have to restart the system, just for this one program, and only for it to [probably] happen again.
Somethings not right here.
Does the program itself work, i.e. in a fresh file adding some objects etc?
Or does that crash too? Maybe that file is corrupted beyond comprehension.
Oh no not the Computer, just the program! The computer is fine, it's just I make the decision to restart the computer. That's when Blender started working, but once I select autosave, User preferences etc. then the crash happens. The program, not the entire computer [thankfully]. Sorry for the confusion.
Okay, I got something else now. Managed to open a few files on 2.83. The meshes I have rigged aren't rigged anymore and some texture images are missing, but I can fix that. However I opened one file and a error message appeared saying " file written by newer Blender Binary (300.43), expect loss of data!".
I see. Well getting material image references back isn't so much a problem. The meshes don't have the vertex groups though so I guess I'll have to do the rigging all over again which may be strenuous, but again I can always just redo that.
I haven't gone to edit preferences or autosave since those two features -- since last checked -- were set using a perhaps newer vers. And is part of what caused this whole thing. I'm afraid if I go click on those features ie preferences/ recover -> autosave, the whole issue begins again.
I thinking about deleting the startup or user pref files first before opening Blender and see if anything happens on startup / going into user preferences.
After that, I'm gonna have to play around; maybe test its limits to see if and when this error repeats and take note of my steps, otherwise I see no issues (yet).
Should I delete the user pref and startup files before anything else? Begin Blender anew?
