1. You need to go here to the texture tab.
2. You then need to set this box to "Image or Movie".
3. This is the box where you can point Blender to the image file you want to use. Instead of clicking "New" or "Open", you should be able to click the little paper icon in front of those buttons to get a list and see an existing "fish" image contained in your file. This is what you texture painted.
4. Now you just need to set the coordinates to "UV" so the texture is applied properly and uses your UV map.
