"The primitives, being manifold objects, do not have wireframe or boundary edges. In the case of the cube, deleting the top face will result in cutting edges.
Select Non-Manifold (Wire, Boundaries) will highlight the cutting edges of mesh objects."
So basicly any closed 3d shape won't work, however if you delete a face from a manifold object, that cutout part would become the knife projection.
Knife project leaks memory each time a text, curve, or surface object is used for cutting. (T90791)
Most likely a bug indeed. 2.92 still worked.
