Blender
RAR files
So I downloaded a lot of models from the VG Resource, and one of the models just so happens to be a RAR file, and I've never seen them before. Is there like an addon I need to download for RAR files?

That is a compressed file, you have to extract it with a program like 7-zip. I think windows has built in utilities to extract compressed files, although I dont know if it handles .rar compressed files. In windows, right click this file and look for an "extract" option of some type.
I do have Windows, however the "extract" option doesn't appear, so I'm assuming that the utility can't extract RAR files. (If I have it on here)

WinRar is the actual compression software that created the file. Look for and download that then use it to open the files and extract it.
Get 7zip, it opens all types of compressed files and is much better than winrar.
7zip does not create RAR files. (at least I haven't found a version that does). Also, 7Zip can cause false possitive virus alerts from your AVP.

I've never had a false positive from 7zip but only download it from the source and not third party websites. What AV are you using?

Regarding 7zip not creating rar files, i dont now why anyone would want to create a .rar file... anything is better than .rar as windows itself can open .zip files and you can even make self extracting files with .exe if you just work on windows... personally i try to make .zip for cross platform, or for legacy on windows i will make .exe

7zip has been leading the way regarding compression and my recommendation is to allow for opening - no one these days should be making .rar
Kaspersky and I too only download from the source. I've sent the false positive in to Kaspersky and that problem is now fixed. As for RAR vs 7z vs ZIP, I really don't care. as long as I can extract the files. But when it comes to extraction and problems, it is always better to try the extraction from the program that created it if there are problems using a second extractor.
I just have one question about WinRAR. Is it free?

No. I don't know what restrictions they actually put into their "shareware" nowadays (you could use it quite freely with only a nag screen many years ago). But it's not free.

Also, don't use it. 7zip is open source and much better than WinRAR. There is absolutely no reason to ever use WinRAR.
Those compressing tools are generally considered freeware. They try to coerce you into registering them but their terms of services allow for ininite use. Here'S a jolly video that goes into the history of Winrar....god bless the net.

Both WinZip and WinRar are commercial products. WinZip will end at the end of it's trial period if you don't buy. WinRar will pop up a bug screen but still is fully functional.

Seriously?

Winrar is totally FREE for personal use. The 40 days of testing are for COMPANIES, however I haven't seen any company use Winrar, they always use ZIP that is integrated by default in any operating system (send to compressed zip file)

Both 7Zip and Winrar are compatible with any compression file system (UltraISO can also open any compression format as well and of course its also free even if it says 30 days of testing)

7Zip doesn't give any false positive, its absurd, one thing is that the file inside the compress really has a virus (that has happened to me) and another is that the program is detected as a virus because it has used a crack or the system is full of viruses, that only happens if you have many pirated programs and games. (Typical character that says, if the crack says that it has a virus is a false positive, No, if it says that it has a virus, it has a virus, pay attention to what its antivirus indicates)

You can have and use as many comprenssion programs as you want, I have Winrar and 7Zip installed, I use Winrar to open all kinds of files, including those of 7z because I have in default for all files, to always compress I use the option of the explorer "send to zip" and then the 7zip to compress folders with thousands of files which allows to reduce a folder of 20GB with more than 100,000 files in only a few 300MB.

The antivirus is not telling you that its a virus, its warning you that 7zip may have security vulnerabilities. Avast tells me that my router can receive attacks and steal data (the suggestion is to remove the router) is the Vodafone router, I can't change it. Anyway if you use Windows you already have a 35GB of virus xD.

Avira is worse, says that everything has a virus.
