In edit more, try selecting those vertices. Make sure you are selecting vertices and not faces or edges. The extra vertices should not be deforming the mesh in anyway, so make sure to use the Circle Selector to search for them, rather than trying to use eyeballing (trust me, ain't worth it).

the verts were completely invisible and unselectedable in edit mode. they would just show up in object mode. its easy enough to fix by duplicating the object in edit mode and deleting the old one. i just find it odd that ive seen this happen multiple times

Well, this usually happens when models are extracted from games. These are considered artifacts. And usually they are easily removed by selecting them in edit mode. However, it is up to you. You can also not touch them at all. Simply ignore them.

When you're in edit mode, try pressing alt + h to unhide hidden vertices and such. Hope it works, only thing I can think of at the moment. :)
