Blender
viewport lag
I recently just purchased at gtx 1070 and was hoping it would give me better frame rate when using the viewport, but that doesn't seem to be the case and I'm still stuck with bad frame rate when trying to animate rigged characters. Is this normal?

How much Vram does that thing have? Because I think the beta version is using more than 2 gb of Vram.

8gb vram
The viewport when using the cycles render engine is VERY slow. It’s basically doing a similar amount of work to rendering (but by default, it’s only set to 32 samples).

I have a GPU that gets similar performance to a 1080ti in Blender, but it still struggles with the viewport. The viewport when in rendered view isn’t meant for working. It’s good for previewing your work, but it can’t keep up for most tasks.

For a real-time rendered viewport, you’re in luck because Blender 2.8 is adding this with the EEVEE render engine. You can download the beta from www.blender.org

Sounds epic, but are rigs that were created for 2.79 be compatible with 2.8?
Your post is missing some info. What view mode are you in? How many verts does your model have? What exactly are you doing when you "try to animate" a character?

What makes you think OP is in render view?

The scene usually only contains roughly 45,000 verts and when I animate using rigs I get roughly 12-13 FPS during playback same as my previous GPU. I’m also usually in texture mode or solid mode if that’s what you’re asking.

What makes you think OP is in render view?

It was an assumption made based on the limited information available.

I would consider it a reasonable assumption that a slow viewport would be in rendered mode. But you are right, that doesn’t mean it is in rendered mode. I just gave the information I could for one of the possible reasons for OP’s issue

That's alright, I was just wondering whether I was missing some information.

Ok, so that low fps is only during playback? Do you have any physics turned on? I assume you are doing a keyframe animation? Weightpainted?

I don't have any physics turned on and yes it is keyframed. The low FPS also occurs when turning on SSM.

Not really mate, the 1070 will only speed up your render times. The viewport is limited by CPU but mainly by Blender itself.
