This has been asked here before, so I'm going to post a link to that thread for you to look through. Plus a link to a similar question that was asked in the Blender Artists forum.

Quick version is that there are different kinds of .mesh files and it appears you'll have to find the right addon or even 3rd party program to open your .mesh file, depending on wherever it came from.

Beyond that you'll have to do your own googling to find the importer or addon you need, if it isn't already listed in one of these links. Trying to mod some of the older games can lead to some obscure and outdated addons or 3rd party programs depending on how old and popular the game or model in question is.

yeah I know i've seen those when I googled the subject. Nif does not work. It wont let me open them, they wont even show up on the file explorer when I tried to open them manually in the program. XPS tool also cant open them cause it's not a xps file.

Which is why I posted here. I cant find anything on google.

edit: tried it again with the xps importer. It gives me a HUGE list of what I guess are errors? At the bottom there's just a long red bar with no text on it so I dont even know the reason for the error. Instead of a message it's just all red

Well did you go through all the options listed in that thread? Someone mentioned that that XNA stuff or whatever is the most common stuff to make use of that .mesh format.

You haven't even mentioned which game you are pulling the models from. Not that I'm saying I'll do the googling for you, but if someone were going to, or if someone else knows the addon you need, you probably should at least bother to include that bit of information.

Also, you don't necessarily OPEN them. Don't know if this needs saying, but just in case. In Blender, and possibly any other programs you might be using too, there is a difference between opening a file and importing it. Blender only opens .blend files, every other file type has to be imported.

I don't know python so I can't make too much sense of those errors. I'm guessing you could be using the wrong version of the addon or the wrong version of Blender though. That is usually the reason for addons throwing errors, in my experience anyways.

Or your addon isn't the right addon for opening whatever version of a .mesh file you have.

EDIT: Or maybe the file you have is itself broken.

I got the models from a mod for sins of a solar empire.

I'm trying to import it. Blender wont take it.

I can't use this files with anything. 3ds max. NifScope. Blender. XPS importer. I just cant seem to do anything with these and yet they were modeled somehow. It shouldn't be this difficult to open a single model file

Why not? You are working with what is probably a dead modding scene at this point. The tools have probably progressed past the point that Sins was using so now there may be compatibilty issues. You might not be able to use the newest versions of software.

Also, did you think to go to the official forums for the game? I think it might have the information you seek.

Autodesk Softimage Mod Tool software (formerly XSI Mod Tool) is a free 3D modeling and animation package for creating non-commercial games and "modding" (modifying games). Autodesk Softimage Mod Tool 7.5 is based on the same professional toolset found in Autodesk Softimage 7.5 software, used by game developers (including Ironclad) to create 3D models, levels, props, and animation.

Probably part of it. Look through the tutorials and stuff on the official site that I linked. The information you need is probably in there somewhere.

Read this thread:
https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/301493/page/1/#replies

And then this is taken from that thread:
https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/176051/soase-3dsmax-importer-and-exporter-tool---updated-for-rebellion

The story I'm seeing is that the Sins devs never made their .mesh files accessible. They probably made some of their own customizations to the file format so their .mesh files can't be opened by any other importers without accounting for those changes. And I don't think they officially released anything to let other people open and edit their original meshes. Possibly laziness, possibly an anti-piracy thing.

So officially it looks like you can only go one way. You can make your own custom models and convert them for use in Sins, but you can't take the original models out of the game.

Except that people could write their own unofficial converters if they were capable enough. It looks like someone did do that, but it is for 3ds Max. Or was. The link to download it is dead - no longer maintained and available to download. And I didn't see any reference to someone else making any other importer/exporters for the Sins .mesh files.

So I think you are out of luck if you are trying to open Sins .mesh files. It appears to be a dead format. Unless you continue to dig deeper than I have and can manage to find some link to that old 3ds importer and can use 3ds max. Or maybe you could try to write your own importer for Blender. Or you could take reference screenshots from the game and recreate models from scratch in Blender, if you want them that bad. Blender IS more than capable of making those models from scratch.

I'm not going to claim that all that is completely accurate, I could be wrong and there might be a way yet. That is the story I get from those threads though, and I'm not digging any further for you than this. If you don't buy the story I see then you're going to have to put in the effort to dig deeper than I have.

These games get old, the modding community loses interest and moves on. The tools don't get maintained and links to said tools start to die. If they are not available anymore you'll either have to code your own tools or just forget about modding the game. Or in this case ripping the models from the game.

The official tools for putting new models into the game do still seem to be kicking around though. So if you wanted to rip the models to tweak them and put them back in the game, you can possibly still change them. Just that you'll have to create them from scratch instead of re-using the existing models.

I wasnt looking to modify and add them to the mod. I wanted to convert them to port to 3d models for animation. This mod was the only source I could find to use. Other ships models dont exist anywhere. This mod was the only source of the ships I was missing

Then I think your options are:

1. Dig through those forums for every last bit of information you can find. Maybe you can find a link to another addon or program to open the files.

2. Sign up and ask in the forums if anyone who still hangs out there has that addon for 3ds max and if they can share it with you.

3. Learn to code and build an addon that can import the file in Blender yourself.

4. Use Blender to recreate the model yourself instead of importing it.
