Are we able to install 2.80 from the Steam > Blender > Properites > Betas > Opt in menu?
If not... why not? :csdmeh:
Or do we need a beta access code to unlock it? If so, is someone able to share it?

If you want the current 2.8 build, you can download it from the Blender site:
https://builder.blender.org/download/

Why isn't it on Steam? I don't know but Steam is not the main Blender distribution site, so I guess they don't want to bother with constantly updating it on here. It's a bit strange that Blender is even on Steam in the first place.

I hate the new UI of Blender 2.8 and some things doesn't work. I'm not sure if will release this year.

Yes, I know. I was answering Shoes question up there as to why that (probably) is so.

Is having Blender on Steam really that strange? :golden: I own several commercial 3D/2D/VR artist applications and even bought the opensource Krita on here (actually, Krita is also quite far behind the latest official version, the dev who updates it on Steam is bankrupt. or between jobs. or something). I also would have thought that with all the technology available, uploading builds to Steam would have been pretty trivial and automated.

I'm extremely new to Blender (basically just poking around seeing if I'll be able to switch from 3dsmax). That's why I wanted to use 2.8 since I don't need stability at the moment and would like to get my Blender configured and ready for the new UI/features when it officially releases.

Soo.. if I were to install the Blender 2.8 build from the link you gave me (thanks btw!) where would I install it to?
Should it go into ..\Steam\steamapps\common\Blender\?
Or will I lose my configs/themes when Steam auto-updates the folder to the final 2.8?
Or should it be installed into a completely different folder location like C:\Program Files\Blender\ ?

I do like running the Steam version though, it's quite interesting to see how many hours I'm spending inside it.

If you look in the Betas tab on the Blender Properties in Steam, you can see 2.79a. I'm unfamiliar with blenders naming scheme but isn't "a" usually implied for alpha?
I suppose it makes sense to only have stable versions on Steam, but the "Betas" tab seems pretty ideal for testing out new builds :3

@Shoes:

2.79a is not an alpha, it's just the next highest "number" after 2.79. 2.79 was the first, then 2.79a, then 2.79b. Has nothing to do with alpha or beta. Blender uses "real" numbers for bigger releases with new features and letters for bugfix releases inbetween.

Where to install 2.8: I doesn't matter. I would NOT install it in the Steam directory, though. That is managed by Steam and you shouldn't change anything there. It might get overwritten by Steam.
Put it into a completely different folder. This way you can also use both and compare (or switch to 2.79 if something doesn't work in 2.8).

If you are just starting out I'd still recommend using 2.79b. You'll probably be watching and reading quite a few tutorials and the UI in 2.8 is different enough that as beginner you will constantly run into issues. But it's up to you, of course.

Blender on Steam: I think it is a bit strange, yes. It makes sense for apps like Substance Painter because Steam provides them with DRM and a payment system. For an open source title like Blender Steam provides no real benefits apart from user numbers (which is probably why they did it). I know Blender is not the only one of its kind on here and of course it doesn't hurt it. It's just strange. Not in a negative way, just in a "huh, didn't expect that to be here" way.

+1, Beta releases use numbers instead letters, the last beta 2.79 is 5 (2.79.5) Last stable say 2.79b (I use the last beta for the option CPU + GPU, is more faster than only the GPU :P. But my saves doesn't work well in 2.8 I have some layers but blender 2.8 only show the first layer and I don't found where are the option to select layer for try eevee and cycles if is better option to render faster.

Yes. Read again. I said that. Blender is not sold, though. I know, it's still a business, especially with all the things attached that *are* sold by different parties. Also I don't see why all of you care so much about whether I find it strange or not. :P

Sorry, I have a bit of dyslexia (not exactly) I have as a brain "LAG". I read the comments but my brain decides to erase some "parts" of what I read, so I respond without realizing it. It always happens to me, I'm sorry. When writing or speaking, it's the same, I think I'm writing or saying what I want to say, but actually, without realizing it, I pause and continue a few words later. I'm badly programmed.

Anyway, there is no problem with what you say, we just give our opinion based on what you say. This happens in all forums regardless of the language. It's like the comments that say "+1 this also happens to me". There is nothing wrong with reaffirming something. That helps the user more giving him more security in the response.
