"Upscale" / increase poly on model?
I know in Cinema 4D there was a feature that allowed you to take a model and use something on it that would add polys to it and round things off, giving it an overall nicer look.

Is there a way to do this method in Blender, or must it all be done manually?

There is the Sub-division/sub-surface modifier in Blender. I think think this is what you're looking for. Select the object, then select the modifier tab in the properties panel, click add modifier then add a subdivision modifier.

There are a few ways to do this. To give the appearance of a higher poly mesh, use a subdivision surface modifier. This is the most used modifier in blender, so it actually has a shortcut; CTRL+1-5, for the respective levels of subsurf. However, if you want to actually create more geometry that you can edit, you should select your mesh (or just a part of it) in edit mode, press W, and select 'subdivide'. Hope this has helped :)
