Sending a file between computers?
Hello, I am new to the 3D animation scene. Infact, I am new to the animation scene in gerneral. I am teaching myself how to use Blender, and as a final project for one of my classes at school, I decided to produce an animation.

The issue is that my laptop is very slow and weak when it comes to rendering things. Luckily I have PC's built specifically for rendering at my disposal. The only issue is that they are at the school, whereas I am doing much of my work at home. I am curious if I could create the 3D models and envirments on my laptop, then somehow transfer them to the schol's PC to render the lighting and textures.

TL:DR?
Can I transfer blender files between computers?

(If my post is violating any rules please notify me so I can either edit it, move it, or remove it.)

AFAIK yes you can, as long as the settings between the PCs has all the custom content shared in between. Otherwise, the file may not be recognized in the other Blender.

:D yes you can!
Just save the project as a .blend file and toss it on a thumb drive or put it in google drive. Download it to the new computer, launch blender, click file>open then find the .blend file on your computer. Tweak the settings and output then you're good to click render.

I do this all the time. When it comes to cache folders for simulations it can be a little harder. I made a smoke animation and it was going to take 12 days to render on my one computer. Because of the huge size of the smoke cache I had to use a USB hard drive to transfer it with the .blend. But after doing that for 4 computers, I had the finished render done in just 3 days.

Good luck!

Thanks bud! Will I need the same version of Blender too? (ie. Blender 2.8 on my laptop and on the computer, etc.)?

I'll be sure to make a note of that. Thank you!

Preferably yes just to be safe, mainly because of what I said earlier about custom stuff. If a version of Blender doesn't have certain features, then it may lead to errors.

There are some backward compatibility issues with using separate versions of the software but considering you can install a portable version of the software that doesn’t take up over 400MB, you should have no problems downloading the exact version used to make the file.

A lot of the time this isn’t necessary, but because it’s so easy to get the same version downloaded, it’s not worth the risk.
