That's what i'm trying to do but instead of extruding outwards it just extrudes vertically.
For example i'm trying to extrude a normal box with the top face deleted. I then select all face, alt+e and select extrude along normals. instead of extruding outwards so it looks like a box, it just extrudes vertically like a tree lol. That's what i'm having problems with
That might be the problem. Trying to extrude all the faces at once.
Try this instead. Select all faces, hit 'e' to extrude, right-click to let them sit where they are, then hit 'alt+s' to scale along normals. I'm guessing this will achieve the effect you're going for with the extrusion.
Edit: Oh, this is the method for 2.8. The hotkeys to do this might be slightly different if you are still on 2.7.
Edit 2: The alt+s hotkey for scaling along normals isn't working for me now. It did on my first test, not sure why it isn't now. Okay, it was because of changing the pivot point from 'median' to 'individual origins'. If your pivot point is the median point the alt+s hotkey works as I was envisioning.
Do you mean the transform orientation? There isn't a pivot point option explicitly called normals, but if you do mean to change the pivot point, then I think you mean "individual origins"?
And can you actually extrude all faces of a cube on your end and have them follow each faces' normal? Doesn't seem to work for me on my end.

And Yes, I meant transform orientations, my bad....
For all faces, let me try
Hm. That's not what happens when I do it. I simply get a larger box, just as expected. Did you try a completely newly created cube? Just to make sure you didn't make any other changes?
Else a couple of screenshots might help?

I just tried that and it still happening for some reason, and it's only extruding it vertically.
Make sure your pivot point is set to the median point.

YEP!!, how do i change my pivot point? is it the orange dot or the red and white circle?
