In my screenshot, top center, there are those four buttons/menus. The first one says "Normal" in my screenshot. The button after that with the circles is how you change your pivot point.
Edit: Make sure that is set to "median point" - the alt+s hotkey changes functionality if the pivot point is set to some of (maybe all of) the other pivot point options.
Thank you soo much, I guess i'll just have to do it this way. In maya is much easier haha, never seem to have this problem. Completely forgot there's the 4 icons on top of the screen. Thank you again
Switch to face select mode (hotkey is 3), select all the faces, then right-click to bring up a contextual menu, then in this menu there is an option called "extrude faces along normals". This will do the same thing as the steps I previously described.
Edit: Hmm, I guess the pivot point settings also affects the behaviour of this contextual menu method. It has to be median point too. Or anything other than individual origins I guess. Median point is the default setting I think, and its basically the only one I work with.
yea, that is basically what I was going for. I found out that to solve the problem problem, all you have to do is change the circle icon which was "individual origins" to "median point" which made it to work, without having to switch from "Global" to "Normal" transformation.
Yeah. Seems any pivot point settings EXCEPT for the individual origins one will work. But I think 'median point' is the Blender default, and it is really the only one I make use of. Can't think of a time where I've ever changed the pivot point for a specific reason.

Yes, that is another equally viable method.
Not a route my mind goes to, because it involves clicking through (more) menus. Personally, I prefer to avoid all menus and work with as much hotkeys as possible, which is why I offered the method I did.
Glad you mention this route though, Jack, because I wouldn't have considered it and it's helpful to know the different tools that are available.
2. Press Alt+E and choose the operator "Extrude faces along normals".
