If you are looking for another FOSS game engine though, I recommend checking out Godot.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/404790/Godot_Engine/
If you're looking to get a job making games, you pretty much need to learn Unreal Engine. A lot of studios require knowledge of it even if they don't release games on it.
If you're just making your own games though, pick an engine and stick with it. Unity and Godot are generally good for beginners. Personally, I recommend Godot. The license doesn't place any restrictions on you.
As said above you really need to learn a 3D modelling application such as Blender and a game engine to be able to make games on your own.
Blender is used a lot for game asset creation due it being free and powerful, it was used by one of the artists who worked on the Dark Souls series.
I would recommend using Unity or Unreal rather than Godot at this time as they have more widespread usage commercially.
Unity is not just for beginners, some well known games on Steam are made with it such as Ori and the Blind Forest, Cities Skylines, Inside, Cuphead, Hollow Knight, Shadowrun Returns, and Pillars of Eternity.
You will need to learn to code at some point(regardless of Unreal's blueprints and Unity's assets), Unreal uses C++ and Unity uses C#, C# is the easier of the two and can provide a good foundation for learning C++ at a later date.
I would also advise picking a smaller and simpler project to begin learning with.
I recommend going step by step with youtube/udemy. 1 Week 2-3h each day, and you can do basic shapes and place them in unity.
1 Months and youre ready for organic modeling learning, sculpting etc. also it is recommended that you can sketch, the planning takes out alot of "imaginary" work out, which helps creating the objects later on in the long term.
To be honest, to me it sounds like youre not aware how much effort it is, dont be scared, but it isnt that simple as you described.
You learn step by step, but in the end it gets easier and easier, start is always difficult with anything. (Walking.. now you walk and dont even think about it, same will go for 3D modelling)
Now if you invest 8-10h a day like I did, youll learn modeling, texturing and unity in 2-3 months, and could even be ready to work at an indie studio.
Ofcourse you can start with characters and organics right away, but it's gonna be a test of endurance, since you will have to repeat what you learned several times, over and over, until you get it right.
But its better to start small, like previously mentioned, not because of how hard it is to learn, but because you will miss out on some basics and have holes in your knowledge.
(Like with anything basically)
I recommend here to look into Topology, (Ngons, Quads, Tris specifically) and how to utilize them properly on a character (its very important for organic modeling).
Dont forget, community is there for a reason, without it, I wouldnt have the motivation needed to progress.
Also feedback. Post your stuff, doesnt matter how it looks, get advices, tips and you'll learn more efficient. Nobody who does 3D modelling will judge or laugh, cause everyone went through this.
Good luck and ofcourse much motivation!
PS: DONT RUSH, Take your time, doesnt matter how much.
