Blender vs Unity for making a game.
Hello, I am very new in all of this, and I'd like to ask, I know a bit how to move in blender and how to control it, but let's say.. I'd like to make a game, put down some buildings, make a characters and stuff, what would be better? I seen on yahoo and other pages that some people preffers unity to make games, but some preffers blender. Do you, more experienced people, have some tip for me? Which would be better? I don't want to spend time learning in one, just to find out I can't do "this or that" in one of the engines. Thank you all in advance ^^

Hi again,

The Unity manual should be of help : https://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/index.html

...and here are some scripting tutorials found through the manual(some are premium) : https://learn.unity.com/learn/search?k=%5B%22q%3AScripting%22%5D

v2.8 will be removing the Blender Game Engine permanently, so I don't recommend getting attached to it. I think it was branched into multiple other projects that would focus on using the blender-game-engine as a GDK exclusively, but the only one I can recall off the top of my head was UPBGE[upbge.org].

If you are looking for another FOSS game engine though, I recommend checking out Godot.

I am looking for something.. I dunno, I Dont want to start learning something, just realising I can't do this or that.. I want to place lots of buildings, make nice detailed characters, lots of interactions, details and stuff, but still making the game simply looking, heh.. Thanks for response tho

What do you think about Unity3D tho ?
Basho 2019 年 7 月 4 日 下午 5:22
while there is a game engine in blender, blender is mainly used for modelling to put stuff into another engine. so as an example, you would model your assets in blender, and then put them into unity.

Blender is primarily for 3d modeling and animation (which most game engines do not do, except for showing the shapes and animations). The game engine was a side project and was not intended for professional use.

If you're looking to get a job making games, you pretty much need to learn Unreal Engine. A lot of studios require knowledge of it even if they don't release games on it.

If you're just making your own games though, pick an engine and stick with it. Unity and Godot are generally good for beginners. Personally, I recommend Godot. The license doesn't place any restrictions on you.

So.. You said create characters in Blender, and transfer them to Unity? You can't make characters in unity, or.. ?
Modmaster68 2019 年 7 月 5 日 上午 12:25
I mean you can create characters in unity as in the 3D models but you have to install an extra extension and to make 3D models that way is very unintuitive (in my opinion). Better to use blender for making the 3D models you want to use and use them inside unity to make the game.

Oh yeah, but this way I'd have to learn two engines, I was struggling with just learning all the hotkeys and stuff in blender, now imagine remembering both of these engines.

I actualy decided that for a simplier game I'd like to practice on it would be for the best to use "Godot", it seems simple, and easy, so.. lets do it! Hehe, thanks ^^

If you want to create really good game (comercial), than it is better to use Blender for modeling, designing, looking at how it will all look like and mainly putting textures on models. Unity is good just as engine it will all run in (it is not made for modeling things (but you can try it)). But if you want really perfect engine I prefer using Unreal engine 4. And one last small tip: "Learn programming. Best choice is C++ (for computers) and Java or Javascript (for phones, computers and web apps). C++ is the best for pc games becouse it is extremly fast.
Reddy 2019 年 7 月 5 日 上午 1:23
I'd preffer some engine with less programming, heh... I am stupid over that

Hi,

As said above you really need to learn a 3D modelling application such as Blender and a game engine to be able to make games on your own.

Blender is used a lot for game asset creation due it being free and powerful, it was used by one of the artists who worked on the Dark Souls series.

I would recommend using Unity or Unreal rather than Godot at this time as they have more widespread usage commercially.
Unity is not just for beginners, some well known games on Steam are made with it such as Ori and the Blind Forest, Cities Skylines, Inside, Cuphead, Hollow Knight, Shadowrun Returns, and Pillars of Eternity.
You will need to learn to code at some point(regardless of Unreal's blueprints and Unity's assets), Unreal uses C++ and Unity uses C#, C# is the easier of the two and can provide a good foundation for learning C++ at a later date.

I would also advise picking a smaller and simpler project to begin learning with.

Yeah I found some nice tutorials to start with, umm, so if I'll create like character in Blender, can I just.. I dunno, drag it to Unity somehow and make it move there?
Zenogias 2019 年 7 月 6 日 上午 2:05
You just have to export the file in some format like .fbx,.obj,If you want to make your character to move in Unity you will need to learn how to do coding with C# but before you can control your character you also need to know how to rig a character as well.

Not to mention, with characters (organic modeling) is a way harder start in 3D modelling than hardsuface.
I recommend going step by step with youtube/udemy. 1 Week 2-3h each day, and you can do basic shapes and place them in unity.
1 Months and youre ready for organic modeling learning, sculpting etc. also it is recommended that you can sketch, the planning takes out alot of "imaginary" work out, which helps creating the objects later on in the long term.
To be honest, to me it sounds like youre not aware how much effort it is, dont be scared, but it isnt that simple as you described.
You learn step by step, but in the end it gets easier and easier, start is always difficult with anything. (Walking.. now you walk and dont even think about it, same will go for 3D modelling)

Now if you invest 8-10h a day like I did, youll learn modeling, texturing and unity in 2-3 months, and could even be ready to work at an indie studio.

Ofcourse you can start with characters and organics right away, but it's gonna be a test of endurance, since you will have to repeat what you learned several times, over and over, until you get it right.
But its better to start small, like previously mentioned, not because of how hard it is to learn, but because you will miss out on some basics and have holes in your knowledge.
(Like with anything basically)

I recommend here to look into Topology, (Ngons, Quads, Tris specifically) and how to utilize them properly on a character (its very important for organic modeling).

Dont forget, community is there for a reason, without it, I wouldnt have the motivation needed to progress.
Also feedback. Post your stuff, doesnt matter how it looks, get advices, tips and you'll learn more efficient. Nobody who does 3D modelling will judge or laugh, cause everyone went through this.

Good luck and ofcourse much motivation!

PS: DONT RUSH, Take your time, doesnt matter how much.
