Annoying selection problem
I've had this selection bug since I updated to blender 2.8 and can't seem to find any solution to it.
I don't know what causes it, but sometimes when I try to select the mesh vertices, it doesn't select or selects randomly throughout the mesh. This is the same for edges and faces and selecting objects out of edit mode. The only fix I found to this is to restart blender because the bug persists if you open a new or old file. Also, it does not effect x-ray mode.

I am having a similar problem where in object mode, I can't select multiple objects in the 3D viewer after selecting the first object.

When I try to select a second object, it merely move the 3D cursor to where I clicked. It doesn't matter which mouse button I use or if I have shift, ctrl or alt pressed, it just moves the cursor.

In order to select multiple objects, I have to do it in the outliner.

I can't find the setting in the Keystroke prefs to fix this, everything looks like it is set properly.

There's a setting under Edit -> Preferences -> Viewport -> Selection called "OpenGL Depth Picking". It should be enabled by default. It sounds like something that could cause this problem. Maybe try enabling or disabling this setting and see if it makes a difference?

I have tried that already and it didn't seem to work.
I also tuned off anti-aliasing/multisample.

Update: I still cant find a solution to the problem and it is happening more frequently now. When I start up blender and try to add or remove an object, the viewport (only the viewport) freezes which is fixed by resizing the viewport. The selection bug then occurs after that. This was not a problem until Blender 2.8 as it was also occurred in the 2.8 beta build.

The problem may lie in some of the addons you've installed.

I'm working on a couple of tutorials for importing and exporting models and I've cleared out all configs and addons to demonstrate addon installations from a vanilla version of Blender.

I'm finding that some shortcut keys are being taken over or being conflicted with when I install some addons. (I now believe that this is causing my particular selection problems at any rate.)

Addons don't seem to install as cleanly as they did in previous Blender versions.

For example, I really, really don't like pie menus and I don't turn them on in vanilla.
However one of the addons I use turns them on when installed.

I can't turn them back off, even when I disable them in the addon.

Nor can I find where they are being turned on in the Blender preferences (keysmaps, addons (options when addons are expanded), themes, navigation, interface, etc) so I can turn them off manually.

According to all the preferences I find on Pies, Pie Menus should be deactivated but they activate when I try to use a shortcut key that is suppose to do something else.

I wish that was the case, but I am using base blender with Sapling Gen and Loop Tools as my only addons. I have not installed or enabled any others.

I'm not the only one with this problem.

just remember the version you use on steam does not receive the daily updates/fixes because all bug fixes after the 2.8 release on steam is classed as "beta" for 2.81 or even 2.82 alpha.

STEAM will not get updates for bugs between the official releases.

your best bet is to move to a daily/nightly build from the official site where most of the bugs that get asked about on steam have already been fixed, you can find them:

Thanks for the help criticalphil, but Blender 2.8 work fine for me, except for this issue, and 2.81 seems to crash if I switch to anything other than object/edit mode.

also my pc specs:
Intel Core i3-4130 3.40GHz
8GB RAM
Intel HD Graphics 4400

So my pc is pretty old and not really made for this, but I can't afford to upgrade it and I don't know much about computers.
