The grid keeps disappearing (inconsistently?) in the ortho views
half the time i try to open the ortho views, the grid is gone, and it is enabled in the grid settings. sometimes its there, sometimes its not. sometimes its not, i save the file and reopen ortho, and its back. terribly inconsistent.

Sure you haven't been turning it off or something, i never had this issue.
Any chance you accidently hotkeyed the viewport overlays button. (however if yiu save the file and reopen that state would be saved aswell)....odd behavior didn't have the issue so far.
Did you try downloading a standalone version from blender.org?
That way you could rule out if it is an issue with the steam version.

Also: Does this happen in a specific render engine (eevee, cycles, workbench) exclusively.
And it may sound stupid ..but a screenshot of the the UI when the grid is gone could maybe shed some light on this.

im pretty sure im not hitting any hotkeys, its happened before and ill exit ortho view and save the file or something small like that it comes back. ill try the standalone version sometime soon, fairly busy atm. no specific render engine, never use them from what i believe. i cant seem to trigger it right now but tomorrow ill try to get a screenshot of it.
Regarding the render engine: By default blender is set to cycles render engine, however there is also Eevee (a PBR realtime renderer) and workbench (a more qworkflow oriented viewport renderer). In any case your blender is set to one of these while you work... you can see that in the Render context menu..the icon which looks like a TV set in the properties window.

I am a bit out of ideas here..the only thing i could think of is: occasionally you can accidently zoom way out of your scene so you actually exceed the viewport cameras clipping distance.
Now or then even zooming in on the selected object with the 'Numpad Comma' key won'T solve the issue.
But yeah hard to tell from a distance here. Hope it can be resolved anyhow.
ah, i see the render engine now. its set to eevee, and thats very plausable actually that i zoom really far out, ill test that out next time i can trigger it.
