In addition, have you removed the default cube in blender prior to importing the FBX?
Ah I see. That's it. Thanks. Kinda weird that I cannot open it straight away without deleting the cube and importing it in. I guess my memory is messing with me and it has always been like that.
You can import them though.

technically, you can open an fbx as much as you can open a word document, they're both text files mr. nitpicky
Go ahead and "open with blender" on an FBX file of your choosing then.
