there must be an single-player mode!!
you could be connection, but do not need xbox gold (for example, for AC Syndicate you need an internet connection to synchronise some things in the game, but do not need xbox gold)
Do I need an Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation®Plus membership to participate in the beta?
Xbox One and PlayStation®4 system owners will not need an Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation®Plus membership to access and play the beta. However, there are some game modes that require such accounts. More details on this will be released in the future.

On console you won't need xbox gold to play it solo. You'll need it to play the dark zones and in group.
You'll need to connect your console to internet but no subscription needed.

Confirming the Source, saw that as well, you dont need gold or plus to play the game, only to engage in pvp and group, but since a good portion of the game will be held in the dark zone, i guess going without gold is a bit of a waste, just like destiny
sure, if TD is the only multiplayer game a person plans to play on their console with other people. if they already have premium access because they play other games it's not like they have to pay more just for this one though.
