Plus the increased utility of range and accuracy
Another test that I've done for seeing if shot placement matters that much more is seeing how far I can get through the square garden mission on hard without getting more ammo for each gun.
Using just a marksman rifle I can get through the first room after the elevator.
Using just an assault rifile I can get part of the way through the roof fight.
Using just a shotgun, I die in the second encounter with plenty of ammo left.
And F SMGs because I suck at using them. I actually die in the first room with just an SMG.
Using just a pistol, I die in the second encounter with infinite ammo left.
Early in the open beta, I also felt like I need more ammo for marksman rifles. I only realized bit later it was because I was using semi-automatic rifles with relatively low damage per bullet, which compensated their damage output by increase rate of fire. I quickly fell in love with bolt-action snipers, more specifically m1a rifle, which had very high bullet damage, 10 round magazine, 150%+ headshot damage bonus and enough rate of fire to pummel targets repeatedly if needed. The moment I started to use it I stopped having ammo problem.
My typical encounter started with headshot (with optional pulse + water if there was a large group of NPCs) on grenadiers or rushers, throw grenade to stop their advance, continue picking dangerous targets with sniper rile and once their ranks are trimmed down I move to close range and switch to assault rifle/SMG.
if u could waste ammo on a marksman rifle like u could a different gun, they would be a bit to good
I can carry 830 SMG ammo + the magazine, which is 40. I have 20 reloads before running out of ammo. Marksman ammo is around 120 - 130, + the magazine which is 18, 7 reloads. If your main weapon is a marksman rifle, you can't be stopping after looting every two zones. Sometimes there are even 10 enemies per zone, and if you don't get criticals it can take 10 or more bullets to kill one guy. It just needs more ammo to be on par with the other weapons.
It really helps, especially when running around for extended periods in dark zone.
Aim good, use proper perks. You can do so much more dmg with DMR within ammo pool than with other guns it's not even funny. If you're not aiming for headshots only with DMR you're just doing it wrong.
Use perk that gives 50% chance of not using ammo on headshot(counts EVERY headshot, not just killing blow). And if you can't hit a broad side of a barn and ammo is wasted anyway - perk that gives 30 rounds of primary on pistol kill. This can keep anybody stocked with ammo forever.
Not to mention use gear that gives you more ammo.
Well in airsoft I played alot as a sniper (semi auto SVD battery powered; but mags were expensive so I only had 2 mags for this gun) but I carried a Glock and MP5K as well.
