When do you optimize?

Sorry if this has been asked before, I tried to search guides and such but all I could find is graphic optimization....

I have a bunch of pieces (weapons and armor) that I like but it's only 275 gear score. I do however get 282-285 drops of stuff I don't like, so the 280 stuff does drop clearly. Therefore, I was wondering when do you optimize? Do I wait until I find something I like in the 280s? Or Optimize the 275 gear?

if you have a gear set or a weapon your happy with optimize it. If its lower level you will have to use more div tech but waiting for a higher level gear item might take longer than grinding for the div tech. But make sure you think its good enough because you will need quite a bit of div tech to optimize all of it.

I don't look at the gear score of an item as much as the talents/attributes. You can always raise the gear score by optimizing, but if the talents/attributes are no good, optimizing will not fix that no matter what gear score you start with. Lower gear score costs more to upgrade but it may be worth it with the perfect talents. So I recalibrate it first then optimize.

Can you optimize a GS 227 item all the way to 286? I picked up the house on lower world tier early on and did not see it drop again on tier 5 :(

It depends on the stats that your gear is missing for example take a holster. Holsters have 5 attributes that can be optimized - the armor, each of the 3 stats, and a major attribute. If you have a gear score of 275 for the holster and 1 or 2 of the attributes are very low (there should be a 4 bar scale beside each attribute), then its gear score should jump to 285+ within 2 optimization tries. If all are balanced out it would be slower. Also once you reach past 288-290s, the score increases very slowly. This is based on in-game experience.
So if you have the perfect talents and gear attributes that you probably wont change then you should defintely optimize it. No sense in waiting around.
Also gears have levels. So the gear of 227 you picked up is probably a level 33 which will max out at 255 I think. Endgame gears are level 34 and start with a minimum score of 256. So if you get a gear of 256, you can take it to 286. Unless if it classified in which case it will reach 293-295.

I would say that 175 is a good score to satrt optimizing, but first i would highly recomend that you recallibrate the stats on the peice to their maximum potential before optimizing, generaly i would never optimize a weapon that i will change out in the future for a better weapon, so i would just recalibrate and only optimize when you have the weaapons that you are going to use for a long time

Depends on your weapon, Crits are good on most weapons, i personaly like meticulous on LMG's, the skill that give signatur skill resources with headshot kills can be great if you have good aim, assaut rifles and SMG's should go with crits, focus more on crit chance with assault rifles and crit damage with SMG's, the one skill that gives you 7.5% crit chance after using a skill can be very powerful if used after a pulse, the only good snipers in the game are the M700's and they already come with the one good sniper skill so no need to recalibrate them unless you want more crit chance. i have little experience with shotguns but i would say to go with crits just to be safe.
