i'm trying to figure out what meaning "data" and other strange files have, if they have one.

the hacknet data files correlate to types of files in the sys directory. I surmise that you can change yourself into another computer by completing all of the pieces of the puzzle for that computer. They are all strictly binary, and the only strictly binary files that I know of, but I'm not that far into the game. I assume that if you check the length of the files, and the bits within, you might be able to play mix n match with the bits from other systems, and pose as those systems using the reboot command.

I've tried removing x-server.sys from some computers, but they still reboot... not fair

I am also assuming that you run into a compiler at some point... a la .cs files. You might be able to compile those at some point, but I'm not sure

incidentally, I hacked the jmail server and changed the password of my account, but when I log back in, it still uses the default password.

also lame... the people sending messages to you, who have jmail accounts, do not show as having sent those messages to you on the Jmail server... although the could manually hack them themselves... but that should be evident later on... somehow.

yes, i know, this game is unrealistic on some sides, but it's still a great game... btw i did some research and it seems that the binary files are just junk... if you figure out something different let me know
