I have it, but I don't remember ever playing it. I think I got the mod that makes it look more "Modern" but I never tried it. I'll give it a shot. Thanks!
Just be careful, it's brutal. Hacknet is a lot more user-friendly.

and I also recommend these although different they do give you that same atmospheric feeling
hypnospace outlow, orwell, then these duskers,tis-100, shenzhen i/o, but they are harder
maybe exapunks but its more puzzly than hacky story
and finally not so much hacker evolution as it is very story driven instead of letting you be free. But it is definitely a hacker game with a virtual terminal, which i guess is the same. I just don't like that there's time and you can't really go outside the story's perspective, but it does have a really long series.
