You wont learn it from the game since you need a few programmong languages for hacking. But you might understand some important security aspects of networks and stuff. Also the exploit animations mostly indicates the RL workways
thank you

With the single exception of having a command to open your computer's actual CD tray, nothing about this game is more than just a game.

No, not really. If I had to list what in Hacknet is similar to 'real' hacking:
  • bash-like commands used in the in-game terminal
  • concept of port scanning
  • concept of exploiting port vulnerabilities
  • basic concept of social engineering (exploiting people and their bad habits)

What is missing from Hacknet (not to say this is bad or needs to be implemented):
  • Scope - There are so many more attack vectors than just open ports on a device.
  • Research/Analysis - Alot of researching as well as alot of planning (though I admit I haven't had the need to do the latter).
  • Programming - Spending a great amount of time trawling through code + creating scripts/tools to test with.
  • Testing/Debugging - Spending even more time trying debug (fix) the monstrosity you created.
  • Visuals - You will never see/use a user interface like Hacknet's in the wild.

The combination of a good story line + pretty visuals + a killer soundtrack is why I play Hacknet. I definitely do not play to learn about hacking.

TBH tho It would be awesome if they had a game where it's accurate simulated hacking. If you know of any such games let me know.

Wargames like over the wire etc.

Tmux is pretty close, except for the 'map'. Which you could probably approximate with some custom program in ncurses or whatever...

For more realistic games, try CTFs and WarGames. OvertheWire is a great place to start if you know Linux.

You want to learn how to hack? Great. Few people really want to learn anything these days.

It's actually fairly easy.
1. Forget everything you ever seen on TV, games, books, you name it. Seriously. Forget it.
2. These days it's about webservers. In other words, learn TCP, UDP and as an extension HTTP. As languages, it's (sadly) no longer C, what you need today is javascript (yeah, I do feel dirty for saying that) to understand what the idiot on the other side copy/pasted together from stackexchange and python to write the more time critical parts of your attack (especially for TOC/TOU exploits). Take your time to KNOW that stuff, you'll need it. And yes, finding it is your first challenge, since nobody is going to hold your hand later either, so you better start learning how to find stuff, too.
3. Set up a VM with Linux (or if you run Linux, set up a VM with Windows). You'll need to know both systems since a lot of the tools of the trade run on either of them but not on both of them. Also you should know the quirks of both systems since you'll encounter both systems. You can forgo Apple systems, nobody uses that for server sided stuff. And yes, I mean it, set up a VM, not a spare computer. Because you'll need some experience with VMs, too.
4. Get at least a passing knowlege of REST APIs and the websocket protocol. Both are often used and both are often not in the least understood by those that use them, so they're great entry points. If and only if you do understand them.

When you're done with that (no, no shortcuts. LEARN THAT!), head over to https://www.hackthebox.eu/

Your first challenge is to hack the joining process. No, I'm not kidding, and yes, this is legal.

If you wanna learn about hacking concepts i recommend Nite Team 4 the UI is still visual but the concepts are based off real NSA docs. Its currently on sale for 20 percent off: https://store.steampowered.com/app/544390/NITE_Team_4/
Cheers!

Yes indeed!!!!
NITE is the closest you can get to real-life Hacking...........

ps. it also has a Hacknet skin (in-game theme), so I guess there is collaboration going on behind the curtains!

Also if Hacknet is too difficult, don't start with NITE yet.
NITE requires a lot more brain-power to solve / finish some missions.

Help is very limited:
- You can learn the basics through NITE's in-game Academy courses (with references to real-life resources)
- Spoilers given on the discussion board also requires you to think for yourself.

So play NITE when Hacknet becomes piece of cake for you!
