From that screenshot you are definitely connected, it shows your (fake) IP adress and username, but this is usually something that happens as part of a specific mission.
Does the reboot command do anything for you? Or use scan and try to copy the x-server from whatever node you find?

I just got to the part where I can see the board to get tasks from Entropy, but have not taken one yet. Im not very far in the game. IDK what to do. Should I just start a new game?
It's essentially what happens when you delete system32 on an irl pc.
I feel incredibly dumb after realising I was just rm*'ing all the folders when the e-mail just asked to delete a single file.
I don't think there's a solution for this, bar just deleting the save and starting a new game.
The crash on tab persists, thought, but I think that's an unrelated thing.
Have you even been following the conversation above? Because that has nothing to do with the issue.
k, scan your computer, find that other computer that's always connected, go to it's sys folder, and do scp * /sys. Should do it, never tried though
(you went into a proxy server and then Naix told u in mail say good bye to your x-server)
To fix this:
open the game, type reboot.
watch it closely, if u see a red line with the words x-server in it then it means u don't have it.
what your gonna do it type scan, then connect to the other connection.
if you havent already hacked it, type probe and run all the hacks till you can porthack and get in.
then use "cd sys" to get into the system files. type "scp *" and wait for it to finish. then reconnect back to your pc (by connect [ip] or scan the pc to see your connection again).
next type reboot and this time you shouldn't see andy red lines (if you do it means u did a step wrong).
everything should be back to normal. Except that the GUI will be ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up and different color. this is because every pc or server u connect to has its own x-server. every x-server is different but for me the best one is the one in the Entropy Asset Server/Entropy Test Server. Later you will have access to many others.
