Also, in ESL some of the theme decks are meta, Goblins and Dragons are meta, players getting to legend rank with them. Also, I have recently seen a awesome Orc deck and I would not be surprised if you could get to legend playing that.
The only themed deck not to do well is werewolves, never seen a good deck based exclusively on werewolves. Some good werewolf cards but only a smattering in a deck.
Currently in ESL you can play lots and lots of different decks and do ok to excellent. I have over 20 decks that I like to play. Currently, this ccg has alot more variety them Hearthstone for example.
For a new player, blue/red aggro combo is good, a creature / action / prophecy deck can easily get you to rank 5 or 4.
Some other decent "theme" decks that work well enough to climb the ladder (but not to hit high Legend) are things like Pilfer Monk (focuses on Pilfer creatures, Master of Thieves, and Thieves Den) and Action Mage or Action Assassin (both focus on heavy Action usage with the Hexmage for damage). Item decks work pretty well too, with certain types (check CVH decks, he loves Item builds) performing far better than others.
Personally I don't play many theme decks because they tend to rely too much on combos or good match ups. I do play Orcs pretty often though, and it's my favorite aggro deck (more fun than hyper aggro Mono Red anything). I've had some success with Goblins and Items too. I usually play more standard "meta" style decks, but not always a pure netdeck from the top players either. Something like a solid Mid Sorc or Mid Archer are pretty fun, and you have a lot of options within those archetypes to build a good deck too.
I have been playing goblins since the start though since I loved themed decks and they are actually good too(although can require luck), so I can have fun while winning, not sure if they are considered meta though, or they wasn't when I started with them. I just hate fighting against control with them lol.
I play a lot of weird themed type decks in casual though.
I Wish this game had way more card choice though, so more theme type decks could be used competitively.
