Solo and then versus arena is where I dropped all my gold. If you do well and enjoy it keep at it. You make gold by winning ranked and casual games, and by doing your daily quests.
I believe Forgotten Hero is available in case you want to do another playthru, for fun, you will get nothing for doing it again.
Clockwork City -> Dark Brotherhood -> Puzzle Sets (in order) -> Solo Arena -> Versus Arena
That'll tend to give you the best learning curve (CC's cards aren't the best, but the difficulty was optimized for newer players).
Once you've gotten reasonably good at Arena and built up a collection, it'd be safe venture into Ranked Play.
Also, play path aside, once you get through the stories, I recommend buying all the Starter Decks as you accrue gold. They're *not* very good as decks, but they are, in terms of cards-per-gold, an excellent value and offer several good Legendaries (not to mention the value of knowing what cards you'll get, rather than taking your chances with pack openings).
I wouldn't recommend the puzzle sets (ones that require gold to buy) unless your really into doing puzzles. But definitely grab the starter decks, it will help you add cards (including legendaries) to your collection.
To clarify, I don't recommend the puzzles as a way to get cards--the rewards are pretty chintzy. I recommend them to new players because they teach you the mechanics, and let you sit and think about the possible plays for as long as you'd like, which is useful when you're just starting out and still need to read all the cards and process it.
I would consider buying the Skyrim theme decks before getting story chapters.... mostly if you didn't get Ancano's Cunning after finishing the tutorial story. Ancano and Alduin are definitely pretty playable decks, especially at lower ranks and if you can tweak them a bit, so they are worth getting early on I'd say. Otherwise yeah, get the stories first.

as a starter you must buy: ANCANO Theme deck and AELA theme deck with your starter golds.
You can hit top 100 with f2p and new account less than 15 hours gameplay (if you are an expert, skilled player just remember this and stop blaming other players cards. Dnt believe me? ask google you will see warriors7's twitch real time video)
After ancano and aela choice is yours.
If you think you are good, PVP ARENA > ALL
if you are not good and looking for boring and safe way to buy
Ancano Theme > Aela Theme > Dark Brotherhood expansion > Clockworkcity expansion > Forgotten Hero mini set > Madhouse mini sett > Other 2 colors theme decks > 3 colors theme decks
btw you can farm soul gems (dust) in practice mode (good starter cheap anti ai decks can win in 7 turns aganist expert ai.. So you can farm 300 soul gem everyday in 65-90 mins. Its little bit boring but if you are looking expensive starter decks without expansions, you can try this.
another tip: stay away from 3 colors decks as starter.
Just remember: this is a CCG and very free to play friendly. You dnt need every card in this game. You can use 50 (or 75) / MAX.
I can't afford to spend real money so starter packs like Skyrim Starter Pack I can't get. I won Aela's Companion in Forgotten Hero story, so from the above info getting Ancano's Cunning might be my next thing.
This is my first card game and I just started so I have to read everything on the cards, still learning the meanings of many of the cards as well as the mechanics. There have been plenty of times that I played a card badly because I misunderstood it.
How does the Solo Arena work? Do you fight blindly or do you get a chance to choose and edit your deck after you know the general type you're going up agenst? What kind of rewards do you get?
Hold onto your gems for a good long while. In the early going, all the cards you'll be opening are new to you. You'll be needing those gems later, once your collection is mostly full, to fill in the gaps. If you start spending them early, you'll end up opening duplicates in the near future.
Also, new players, no offense, have a really bad sense of which cards are the best, so you're likely to regret spending choices you make now.
You draft a deck at the beginning--it'll show you three cards, you pick one of them, and that repeats 29 more times, until you have a deck of 30 cards. You then use that deck the whole time.
Note that you aren't going to be chosing from cards you own--it's giving you picks from all the cards that exist, and you don't keep that deck. It's just a 'loaner' for the Arena run. After each game you win, you'll be allowed to draft one more card (again, it's just part of the 'loaner' deck, you aren't keeping it in your permanent collection).
The rewards are in gold, gems, cards, and packs. If you have a losing record, the rewards will be pretty paltry. If you win a bunch of games, you'll net a substantial profit. The rewards for Versus Arena are somewhat better than those for Solo, but Solo is much easier and lets you play at your own pace.
Just wait in general. Play some, make some decks, and figure out what style of deck you like playing. Then build towards that. Don't just craft cards because you have the resources, you can sit on them a bit.... especially since it's likely worth it to just craft a set of 3 at a time anyways.
