Roguelands

the plaguelands boss is broken as hell. . .
I played this when it was early access and they only had 4 zones complete and 4 others were open but had no enemies.

okay, I'm still a noob, and I might be venting but,

this is the first time I've been to the plaguelands and wow.

first, the boss is invulnerable and you have to run from it, that's ok.

but then you touch the hives and it's vulnerable and it immediately rushes you and if you get touched once, you get stuck in place unable to move or get away while it just hits you over and over again.
it moves faster than you,
its body is as wide as the passageway so there's no way to juke around it if it corners you so its literally impossible not to get touched by it.

what's strange is the first time it did that to me, it brought me down to 1 hp and then I stopped taking damage and was able to spam spells and attacks on it until it died (and it soaked a ton of damage, I was doing 62 per hit and I lost count how many times I had to hit it)

the next time I went in, again, it chased me, i dodged it, touched the hives, made it vulnerable. . . and it did it to me again, it touched me once, I got pinned down and this time it just get damaging me until I died.

this guy, is broken as hell.

may as well not even have a damage rating for him, just make him instagib you, do 9999 damage.
I mean, getting hit once is basically a death sentence anyway because he just locks you down and keeps hitting you

wow that still in the game? i've also been playing since early access but haven't played in a while. thought that would've been fixed by now. but i've never really had that experience of getting stuck by it but i know it's in the game. guess the main thing is to keep moving really.

also, the part where u got hit and kind of stayed at 1hp for a while is an actual thing in the game since one-hit-ko's do exist. the 1hp invulnerability is meant to give players time to run and heal themselves for some time before actually dying.

yea it seems the dev hasn't updated the game in a while. hopefully, whenever he decides it's time to update again, this will be one of the fixes. haven't played this game in soooo loooong
Icedfate Jan 21, 2017 @ 10:56pm
I see, well I guess I'll just have to be more careful next time I go to plaguelands then.

the 1 hp thing is nice, adds a little fairness, I guess.

I realize you are "supposed" to die to progress in the game, but that death just felt like shenanigans.
RAM_Gaming Jan 21, 2017 @ 11:23pm
Wtf? I've never had a problem with him, he doesn't even seem to have that much health. And I don't think I've ever gotten hit by him because he's so easy to dodge.
Icedfate Jan 22, 2017 @ 10:13am
well, I've been playing more and as for "easy to dodge", yeah, it is kind of "easy" if you have planty of room and don't have like 10 other enemies rushing at you and shooting at you from all directions.

I have beaten him several times now, but I have to clear out the enemies first while being careful not to touch the hives, while the boss is still invulnerable it moves super slow.
clearing out the enemies can be a pain wen like 6 or 7 of those heads come at you all at once.

I dunno how anyone plays a melee character, I have to use ranged attacks all the time.

and then, i went into the molten crag and I'm not sure what triggered the dragon boss to appear. I followed its pattern and beat it the first time. but then the next time I encountered it, it hit me once, did 5 damage and inflicted burn staus and it ticks like 4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,dead and the ticks come so fast, i'm spamming healing and I just cant heal fast enough.

then in another run, I was doing really well, got to level 46 and I try "challenge level 1", and wow, the curve on that , it's like 10-20 times harder. enemies that had 20 hp now have 500+. enemies that did 2 damage now do 18 damage.

I go into deep jungle and every time I touch the vines, super fast worms come rushing at me, and then a stray shot poisons me,18 damage I start spamming health packs and 4,4,4,4,4,4,4, dead.

maybe I'm playing this game wrong but every enemy seem super damage spongy. even at level 30 I have to hit each enemy 10-20 times to kill it and I die in 2-3 hits, unless I stay in the first 3 zones and then that's no fun.

I don't know how you do this without getting hit
hoppitty Jan 22, 2017 @ 12:00pm
I dunno, I actually find the plague beast pretty easy. Are you dashing? (Q and E) Just stay low and he'll go low too leaving plenty of room to jump a couple of times and dash over him, and just dash everywhere instead of walking.
Icedfate Jan 22, 2017 @ 5:44pm
like I said earlier, I was still new to the zone. I still feel like if you don't clear out the trash mobs, then the bosses, all the bosses are a nightmare.

it looked like he moves faster than me, but he's actually slightly slower, it was just the increase in speed when he became visible caught me off guard.
the second time I fought him, I inadvertently summoned him while trying to dodge the heads and the shooting guys and then he came out and I think it was the little heads that pinned me down that time, I've been pinned down by them before.

I'll admit that I would have been bored already because I thought the first 4 zones were too easy.

so maybe this is worth playing a bit more.

I think your problem is that you're trying to go to the Plaguelands and/or Molten Crag too early in a run. Honestly, the Plaguelands boss is easy *if* you have a ranged character. (I never made it that far with melee as of yet.) If you're having trouble clearing out the little mobs before dealing with the boss, that probably means you're underpowered for the area, or not well-practiced in dodging.

Since, from your description, dodging seems to be an issue for you... the key points are using the Q-E dashes and jumping around. The most important survival skill in any Sean Young game is not getting hit.

You may want to consider a part- Vitality build, so you have more health to work with. Once you have 100+ in Vitality, you actually start getting health regen. There's also certain combat chips, like Bubble, that can give you DR.

@Bullet-spongy: I agree to a certain extent. It's DEFINITELY true of the Challenge enemy variants, but in my experience the only normal enemy that I consider to have way too much health are the Whisperwood boss and the Demon's Rift summons. If you're experiencing bullet-sponge with a lot of things, you're probably either underleveled or you haven't built your character properly. The best way to raise your relevant stats is to make sure you have gear that scales at +2 in your attack stat and spread out the experience amongst your gear. With a solid Dex character, I've reached ~180 damage per gun shot at ~lvl 70. (And even then it took me 20 minutes to take on Caius with those Shadow Sliver sponge swarms.)

As for the Lava Dragon in Molten Crag.... yeah, he's a little busted. Primary solution: don't get hit. You can craft potions that reduce the flame ticks if he does hit you... but since he's a worm-type, he can get like 1000% fire on you and you're basically dead no matter what you do. Not too hard to dodge, but it's a death sentence if you can't.

(Side note: it's not really productive to start with a complaint about an issue that you experienced in a much older version of the game.)

not sure what you mean by "a complaint about an issue I experienced in an older version of the game".

if you mean my opening statement about early access and only 4 zones open, that was merely background explaining how familiar I was with the game.
admitting that I had not seen any of the plaguelands enemies yet.

I see this alot, people saying "if you are having trouble, you are underleveled"
so... what am I supposed to grind to level 70 running the first 4 zones 1000 times?

I get tired of desolate canyon, desolate canyon, desolate canyon, hollow caves x10, deep jungle x20, shroomtown x10 then I go into molten crag, die

start over

desolate canyon x 10, hollow cave x10, start the galactic empire quest series, get to the second quest, enter ancient ruins, get attacked by invincle boss that I have to run from, die in 2 hits. game over.

the destroyer isn't even what killed me, if was all the trash mobs, because I'm trying to run for the exit, I get swarmed by trash mobs with no time to kill them, and once you start getting hit, it's too late, there's no time to heal.

I know it's supposed to be hard, but I feel like I'm banging my head against a wall.

20 hours playing and I've literally made no progress. every time I get a good item I lose it. every character I make dies.

I've built up my base a huge amount, upgraded the harvester droids, have a huge stockpile of tier 1 crafting items but I can't get any further.

also, I'm not sure what you mean by "not geared properly". yeah I guess I don't know how to get the better weapons yet. I've been using the items I craft from medallions, I can't seem to find anything better.
I haven't managed to level up any items past 5 yet, because it takes too long and then I die and lose them.

I want to play this game but it's starting to be not fun, it feels like I'm just grinding mmorpg style. like in that south park episode where they just sat in the first forest killing wild boars until they reached max level because if they went anyplace else they just got killed.
disasternoj Jan 23, 2017 @ 12:44am
It's possible that I haven't felt like it's all that grindy because I've been looking at it as a quest to get strong enough to survive the later levels. I think it also helps to do the quests from QuestBot, since you get EXP and various currency rewards from killing specific things or giving him specific items- it kinda motivated me to go back to earlier planets more times.

@Gear: in general you'll always be using things you craft from emblems, but a lot of the gear options don't open up until you get level 2 and 3 loot to work with. You want to pick a race and set of gear with strong stats for the weapon/combat chips you want to be using so that it scales your damage rapidly.

Honestly I don't know what to tell you. If you're not enjoying it, then I guess decide whether you want to keep investing time into it. I have a very careful playstyle, and now that I've got a handle on how the game works I'm progressing rapidly.

Maybe try using the wiki to figure out what kind of build you want to make? *shrugs*

I know you are trying to help.

I dunno what you mean, it's not grindy. it takes me 4 hours to reach level 30.

I played for 6 hours one time and got to level 46 and then I died.

I have made pretty much all the tier 1, 2 and 3 forge recipes, but the tier 3 items don't seem any better than tier 1, they just have different stat spreads.

I dunno what the point of 6 different droids are for, they all do the same thing.
does droid fuel even do anything? the droids seem to have infinite fuel (not complaining about that lol)

but it seems like everyone's tips are so vague

it's like
"git gud" . . . trolled
"don't get hit" . . .duh
"use better items" . . . if I can find better items...
"use Q and E" . . . yeah, I played 25 hours and still haven't figured out what Q and E are for?
"build your character better" . . . how? I always take vitality and one of the damage stats depending on my weapon.

I'm sorry this has gone off the rail because it's not even about the plaguelands anymore, I actually think the plaguelands are not so difficult, it just caught me off guard the first couple of times.

but then, now I'm seeing people everywhere whenever someone complains aout the difficulty, they say "oh this game isn't hard, you are just a bad player"

I've played Magicite and completed all the challenges and unlocked everything.
I have 1001% on binding of isaac rebirth (irrelevant to this game, i know)
my point is that i'm not "bad at videogames".

I got destroyed by the destroyer the first time.
I looked on here and people say
"oh it's not hard, just avoid it"
"use bubble" "use the speedup"
"i made a level 1 character and was able to reduce its damage to 1 damage with the proper build"

I tried again, I created a faith based character , grinded up to level 40 went in there again and tried to outrun it.
I used bubble and each time I get hit I take 1 damage but then It pops the bubble and i have to use it again.
I try to get ahead of it and it outruns me. hits multiple times then moves up, blocking the way forward, then circles around and twists downward before its tail is even past me.

I spammed bubble, used up all my mana, managed to break away from it, next room had 4 of those giant things and 3 of those blue things, I get hit 3 more times trying to move around them all the while the destroyer is coming back at ultrasonic speed,

I run out of mana, 18 damage, 18 damage, i'm dead.

how the frig is that "easy"?!
hoppitty Jan 23, 2017 @ 10:17am
I just asked if you were dashing, not insinuating you didn't kow how to.

You might want to try a different faction on your next character. I've never managed to outrun the destroyer either, but he doesn't appear for any of the other factions as far as I know. I found the ruins and shroomtown great for leveling, since the jungle has poison and the other two have floating rocks to dodge.

Try making an ironman character. I don't remember what level you need to unlock the anti-hero uniform but that thing is great -- it ups a random stat by 2 every level. If you've unlocked the oompa race you've got about the best race to start with already. Play ranged, it doesn't really make a difference what gun you use to start.

The red guy in desolate canyon will sometimes give you his axe instead of health potions. It's the best melee weapon...it fires axes that go further than any projectile and pierces thru enemies, the first character I got past level 100 was using that axe!

These are just tips of course, you'll find your own prefered items and such as you go.
Icedfate Jan 23, 2017 @ 2:00pm
yeah, thanks for the help.

I played all last night and got a character up to level 56. playing ranged, I found the galactic flamethrower and suddenly the game became fun again.

although I still spent like 2 hours grinding desolate canyon at challenge level 1. the last time I tried deep jungle at challenge level 1, it was like... get hit once, 18 damage + poisoned, 4,4,4,4,4,4,4,dead. I'm not sure I want to do that again.

the DoTs in this game are way too strong, and they can stack multiple times. you get hit by a DoT and it's basically a death sentence, game over, might as well not even roll for damage, just put a 5 second timer and countdown to death

I guess you're supposed to sit there and farm up 5 of every status resist mod and put them on your stuff before going out further into the harder zones?

I'm just wondering, if this is what challenge level 1 is like, then what is level 3 like?

it seems ironic too, because in challenge level 1, the trash mobs have more hp and do more damage than the boss mobs. unless maybe like, they weren't always that strong? and sean went in and buffed up the trash mobs hp and damage but forgot to buff up the bosses? in challenge level 1, the easiest enemy in desolate canyon is the urugorak.

Im wondering what rarity is your gear? and ringabolts axe is not close to the best melee weapon

I agree the DoTs are way too strong, level 130 something I died because the boss hit me once for 100%+ burn, it's ridiculous.

The setup i've gotten farthest with is Dex/tec with the War-Forged Gun (War-Forged makes it place a turret for free for every combat chip you use, so you place 2 turrets for the price of one), you can get 10k dps, probably more with it, and kill the Challenge level 3 demon's rift boss Caius in seconds.

All I can say for The Destroyer in Ancient Ruins is spam Bubble (only use it when your last bubble pops of course) and use Q & E to dodge everything. The portals are always in the very top right, and when you first spawn in if there's a path going up and one going forwards, always go forwards. Up could be a dead end but forwards will never be a dead end because right is higher priority than up in the generation. Seems like a stupid tip but I've died from running into dead ends like that before.

Speaking of dying if you're about to die you can hit esc and quit without saving. If you wanna get really cheaty, when you die, stay on the death screen and hit ctrl + alt + delete, go to details, find "Roguelands.exe" and "end process tree", or power button your computer, this will take your character back to the last time you closed the game with "Save & Quit" on your ship.

ALSO always carry a lot of potions, they will save you from DoTs.

the problem with potions, is if I get hit with a DoT, I have to exit combat mode, then spam the number key and then there's a delay as my character uses it. The DoTs kill you so fast, there's barely enough time to use the potion, and then I get hit again while I'm focused on healing.and then the potion doesn't even heal the DoT, it just reduces the time in half, which isn't that helpful when you have 200% stacked on you, taking 4-5 damage per tick.

sorry, if you read this in my other post. I know I'm probably repeating myself.

as for that guy in the demon's rift, I tried to fight him, and he is insane, he fills the screen up with shots, he does 20 damage and he shoots this huge black vertical line that is 100 feet tall that just sweeps across the screen and if it hits you, it pushes you back and just keeps hitting multiple times and it moves faster than you so you can't even get away.

then I tried to go into the whisperwood, (challenge level 0, not even level 1) I'm doing 180 damage per shot and I try to shoot the trash mobs, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 shots and it's still not dead, then sudenly explosions start appearing on my position, and I'm dashing and it's just , boom, boom, booom, boom, boom, boom, boom, explosion after exposion, again, again endlessly, each one spawning at my current position, I can't afford to stop moving for an instant, all the while I'm supposed to be fighting things that shoot these super fast shots that zigzag in random patterns and do 20 damage when they hit me .. .I barely excaped with my life.
