The classic version (which also is included when buying Downfall now) was released PRIOR to the Cat Lady though (with different engine & some different mechanics and also somewhat different story).
Ingame chronology has the Cat Lady somewhat go first (also some later events within Downfall may make more sense if you already played the Cat Lady beforehand and might even just so much as confuse you if you didn't).
(Though it might actually be interesting to experience Downfall first, as I imagine, it will have you quite intrigued to THEN go for the Cat Lady. Sadly, I cannot experience that no more :P, so I can't be sure on this.)
That being said, these games are no real sequel or prequel to one another. There is some intertwining, but both games feature a (intriguing/awesome etc.) story that does not rely on the other game. Both stories are quite distinct and also differ in topic and tone. Overall eeriness & some horror are included in both though. They play out in the same universe.
If you start with the new Downfall, I guarantee the stories will be totally spoiled for you.
The new version of Downfall replaces the original, thus cronologically making TCL part 1!
But I don't think that going for Downfall first will spoiler the events of The Cat Lady that much. It sure will be a little confusing if you haven't played The Cat Lady before Downfall, but I think there might also be something to be gained by going through Downfall first. There is not much revealed about The Cat Lady when you think about it. I guess it could more so instigate one's interest in the other game.
I might be mistaken though...
EDIT: maybe I'm a little naive though. Maybe these later events in Downfall will not be just confusing but also seem off and thereby spoil the game that way.
For now, let's say, general recommendation should be: Cat Lady first, then Downfall.
Maybe we should do a spoileresque thread like 'Is it viable to recommend going through Downfall before The Cat Lady?' sometime.
Come to think of it, Downfall makes more sense if you play it afterwards
I think I missed something and misunderstood you last time. Anyway, I did not spoiled the game yet, so I can truly enjoy the feelings you described. And thank you both for your participation in this "uneasy" decision. It's suprisingly how people can still be helpful in Steam community in "these" times. (no offense)
Also, how do you consider major spoilers "irrelevant"??
