Can players force vassals to confederate with them?

Trying to get Mannfred and friends to join me, but they spend all of their time trespassing in my capital. Got fed up and cut them down before besieging Drakenhof but when I win the siege I'm allowed to subjugate them with no option for confederation afterwards. Have I done something wrong?

Isn't confederation done via friendly politics rather than victory in battle? I had this issue with the Dwarves, but it turns out you can't confederate one of the factions without a mod/DLC as it's a part of the lore these 2 factions don't get along so you can only vassal/defeat them. I imagine this is something similar?

Unless there is an option to confederate after a settlement capital battle i haven't encountered yet. I couldn't say, i've never considered conquest against the same race productive when you could be fighting your anethema and just buy out your own race as it were with sweet nothings. Tackling two problems at once.

Searched other threads on this topic and it appears I would need to butter up the vassal, release them from vassalage and then try again afterwards. Unfortunately this is Mannfred I'm talking about who is more likely to backstab me with his pointed trespassing in Schwartzhafen so I've given up trying to get him for this run.
