I really never bothered with them (playing Dwarves) we were rarely at odds, but a few times they took dwarven lands from minor clans and goblins that I wanted. By the time we could come into conflict I was usually too powerful and didn't see the need to start anything.
The Wood Elven AI is out of control, I attacked one Elven settlement with my Chaos armys and they chased me all over the map from Norsica to the southern bad lands.
Will Bretonnia be a counter to the Elvens or the next AI super power in the game?
If Bretonnia and Elven AI ever allows then to confederate, campaigns will short and not be much fun!
On a personal note, judicious use of guns, artillery, and heavy cavalry/infantry works best against the Wood Elves and if you time your attacks right (assuming you can tolerate their existence until the Chaos invasion starts, that is a good time), you can burn Athel Loren to the ground before any of their armies can respond.

All day this. Finishing my green skin campaign means ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ their stupid hippy tree towns so hard they never forget it. At 27-36k per sacking it's going to take one hell of a peace treaty before I'll sign.
They don't seem to mind getting Avatar'd while they encircled my minor settlements. But you can use sieges to draw them out.
Lets hope for the best.
