Is there any way i can upgrade my army for higher tier soldiers? And if i can please teach me.

I looked up and down menus in and out of town with the lord. if there is no such option also let me know, i appreciate it. The game is fantastic, but does have a steep learning curve.

Ranking up is automatic and represented by chevrons on the unit card

Right through experience, i was thinking more in terms of converting spearmen to halberds, or sword and shields to great swords and so forth.

Afraid not. You'll have to recruit them locally or globally.

This was actually added in the Champions of Chaos DLC for warhammer 3, its a core mechanic of the chaos rework and there's a mod for that game that adds that option to every other race. Sadly warhammer 1 or 2 dont get these updates anymore.
